I'm very musical myself, and would like to be able to help you, but don't exactly understand what it is you want to know?

b = flat
# = sharp etc?

Is that the kind of thing you're after?

He wants to learn how to read music (at least that's my understanding). Not something that can be taught very easily online.

XoxidE, do you know which keys are what on a piano at least?

I've got the perfect solution!

Go find a friend who can read, a piano and a video camera. Ask your friend to play slowly.

I guess you know what to do from here

Well the keys on a piano are A,B,C,D,E,F,G and they just repeat. A sharp (#) is the next key to the right and a flat (b) is the next key to the left. They can be black or white keys. So Cb (c flat) is a B. Or maybe it's the other way around, I forgot

There ya go.

Man you need to learn from scratch ... or just cut to the chase and go buy a freaking dvd on the subject.

I still find it very laughable that he is trying to pick up piano overnight in hopes of being remembered for his performance at his schools talent show.

While it's laughable I guess it's also very honorable cause to try and pull something like that off is ballsy but if you're lazy and are only relying on online information haha he just isn't going to pull it off unless her really tries to learn.

He will be much more remembered if he played a song like this:

Artist: They Might Be Giants
Album: Here Come The ABCs

Alphabet of nations!

Algeria, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Dominica, Egypt, France, The Gambia
Hungary, Iran, Japan, Kazakhstan, Libya and Mongolia
Norway, Oman, Pakistan
Qatar, Russia, Suriname
Turkey, Uruguay, Vietnam
West Xylophone, Yemen, Zimbabwe

or maybe

D And W Lyrics
Artist: They Might Be Giants
Album: Here Come The ABCs

D, look at D
Half a circle, half a moon, an apple slice
There goes D, Captain D
My boy D, Commander D, the well-known D
D's getting on in years so he moves a little bit slower now
D is shy and doesn't get out of the house much anymore
And then there's W, here comes W
It's double wide, it cannot hide its pride, it's W
They call it W, there's that W
It thinks it's king, its all-time favorite thing is W
"W, you think you're so great"
"Well, I am pretty big"
"Yeah, you're okay. You're just not as great as you think you are."
"How come I never see you around anymore, D?"
"I got this big TV set at home now. And I like to watch the sports."

Fake-Believe Lyrics
Artist: They Might Be Giants
Album: Here Come The ABCs

F is for fun
F is for fun
F is for fake-believe

Now look at my crown, I'm acting mighty bossy
I'm king of this town, and (my kick?) gets extra frosty
From this moment on, please call me Lord Fauntleroy
That's Little Lord Fauntleroy, please

F is for fun
F is for fun
F is for fake-believe

Fake-Believe, Fake-believe, Fake-believe
Fake-Believe, Fake-believe, Fake-believe
Fake-Believe, Fake-believe, Fake-believe
F is for Fake-Believe

Fake-Believe, Fake-believe, Fake-believe
Fake-Believe, Fake-believe, Fake-believe
Fake-Believe, Fake-believe, Fake-believe
F is for Fake-Believe

F is for fun
F is for fun
F is for fake-believe

We're wearing fake fur, and riding on alpacas
On the wild frontier, wearing wax mustaches
Pretending we're cowhands, yodeling like cowhands too
Yodel-ay-he-hoo

OK, the notes lengths

The 'circle' as you call it, properly known as a Breve is 4 beats

Breve with a line coming up (or down) is a minum - 2 beats

Black filled breve with a line coming up (or down) is a crotchet = 1 beat

Quaver = 1/2 beat

Semi-quaver = 1/4 beat

Demi-semi quaver - 8th of a beat

Hemi-demi-semi quaver = 16th of a beat!

If there is a . after the note, you add on half its length again.

So a minim with a . after it is 3 beats.

This is regardless of time signature etc...
