I was thinking of this

quote:
If you can keep your faith to yourself, i dont care who you pray to, pray to jahwe, satan, osiris, zeus, vishna or the flying spaghetti monster for all i care

I may came off a bit harsh with my responses on these topics, but thats due to the fact that becouse of some incidents in my youth my despise for religion and most religious people is infinite.

@Moral Hazard: The sad thing is that some people dont get it. Jahowas whitnesses for instance arent so bad, even though they still raise my blood pressure every time they ring my doorbell, after they hand out their leaflets they usualy leave. Its the random people on the street that come up to you and spew holly bullshit that piss me off. For instance, one lovely warm sunny sunday morning my friend an i are sitting at a cafe sipping our lemonade and discussing things of no importance when a random middle aged couple comming from the church starts attacking us saying that we sat there for a whole hour drinking instead of going to the church and listening to the word of god, and that if we continoue on the path we are now we would die and go to hell and good people like them will go to heaven. Needles to say that my friend way like while i tried to decide if i should throw my glass of lemonade straight into their faces. i didnt becouse it was to delicious.

Another random incident. I dont know how its called in english but it was one of those days in the year when good christians shoudnt eat meat. Well i was working my ass off the whole day and i decided i deserved a big greasy hamburger. I stop off at the nearest fast food place and take the hamburger back to my car. Half way trough it, a mother with hear about 5 year old doughter comes by, and the little brat points at me and asks her mom why cant she eat meat today if i can. At that moment the mother goes fucking mental. Accusing me of being a bad influence on her child for letting her see me doing such disgusting thing in public (wtf i was eating a cheeseburger) when i should werry well know that becouse christ didnt eat meat i also shoudnt. The she proceded to ask me just what kind of a christian am i and when i told her i wasnt one she grabbed her doughter and slowly backed away like i was some sort of ax vielding murderer.

This next one is one of my favourites. And old lady was collecting money for the church and asked me if i would donate some. In the most polite voice i could manage i told her that im not religious, i dont care about the church and that judging by the fact that i saw the priest driving around in a brand new Audi A6 3.0d a few days ago that the church is anything but broke as she claims. If they want money to renovate it, let the priest sell the audi and buy himself a yugo. She was following me for 10 minutes yelling at the top of her voice that i am a satans follower, a demon a damned sould and that she hopes i burn in hell for eternity. Eventualy though two cops who actualy saw the whole thing decided that fun was over and they asked her to be quiet or she will be locked up for disturbing the peace.

mmmm thats your belief. Why question something that you dont believe on?? If you think there's nothing above, why are you even questioning?!?! .. For many, there's something called faith and a testimony on greater things in life. Those who believe on God pray, and build this bridge of communication. Its hard to explain if you dont even believe in it. It's a strong thing if you are spiritually strong. if that makes sense.

I will advise you to read my comment again. I said i am perfectly fine with a persons beliefes as long as that person keeps them to them selves. I dont have a problem with them until they themselves make it my problem. Unfortunately there seems to be quite a lot of people that find my lack of faith in god disturbing and are trying to convince me that its in my best interest to change my beliefes therefore they are making their beliefes my problem.

Mmmm You definetly dont sound that happy.

I dont understand how people can hold rigid religious views inspite of the fact that they are highly educated. There are some PhD students in my Dept who will try and gather all non-christians, typically international students, and teach them bible. they bring food, have parties and then preach christianity. If you don't go to their meetings, they will give you a hostile look whenever you happen to cross them in a corridor. i'm like wtf ? keep your faith to yourself. And they don't try to convince you how good their religion is. They will ridicule your religion and without any logical justification claim christianity to be the only true religion. why ? 'cause it says so in the bible

This from PhD students, who wouldn't otherwise declare anything to be true, unless proved mathematically !

Thats the problem with a lot of religion. Some even look bad at others just for been part of the other religion.. even among christians themselfs. Some teach that they are the perfect one and the other's arent, and they would always look down on the others. Its the problem with people who claim to be religious and all Bible readers, but they dont learn the most important things from the Bible itself. Im religious but I respect all other religions, Im sure there are great people on the other religions as well and do great things also. Why look down on them?!!? .. respect its the key word. You dont even know how many christians bash me or throw me an ugly look or tell me Im going to hell for been what I'am.. oh well. Conclusion.. those people teaching religion and looking bad at you just cause you didnt go to their meetings need to learn more themselfs. Sad

Agreed. What's more appalling is the fact that these people are highly educated in science. They seem to compartmentalize their brain. They think logically only when it comes to science and fall victims to their own irrational belief when it comes to religion.

In my opinion, the most serious issue here is the lack of understanding of one's own religion. It has been said that deep down, all religions imply the same thing. Yet, on the surface they seem to differ widely from each other. Serious religious study should be left to the intellectuals who are capable of interpretting scriptures correctly and deriving the deeper implied meanings. But in today's world, people who claim to preach their religion are themselves not qualified to do so. Hence this difference of opinion and wars based on religious beliefs.

This thread really supports the stereotype that the irreligious are pricks with sanctimonious attitudes. For every answer you can prove that there is a god, you can proove there isn't and vice versa. Now you can tell me that most Christians are pricks too, but this isn't true, just as you and I know that most people who aren't religious aren't pricks also. You guys make it seem like people who are part of a religion are all bad people which isn't true. There are bad people, and there will always be bad people, black, white, atheist, jew, buddhist, whatever.

For every bad story you have with a christian, I too can tell you a bad experience with one. I can also tell you bad experiences I have with irreligious people, but I am not going to tell them. I would just be another irreligious person on the internet who thinks everyone is intellectually inferior to me.

That's what I love about aethiests, their smug attitude, especially when dealing with those who are religious. You can live believing in God, refuting Darwinism and believe the Earth is the center of the universe and still lead a fullfilled life. The problems arise when people from both ends of the spectrum try to impose their beliefs on the other.

It is the remnant of age-old divisions of psychological and governmental systems, created for several reasons (trade, control, expansion, war, illness, conceptualization of the misunderstood).

It is possible that back when people didn't have the common things we have today, such as antibiotics (just one example of how the various subsystems of this world interact as part of each other, in this case mold and the human 'immune system').

They were supersticious, and they prayed, and *sometimes* coincidence provided backup for prayer.

There is also placebo effect... it is a very real medical mystery. The human mind, given placebo effect under right conditions, can sometimes have very real and positive impacts on a person's situation and health.

justmy2cents,ofcourse.

When I was little my mom use to tell me the point of prayer was for God to show God that you cared and in return God would favor you over the rest. My mom use to tell me that if you really wanted something and prayed for it to come true it would normally come true. But when the kids at school didn't stop making fun of me I stopped believing
