I may came off a bit harsh with my responses on these topics, but thats due to the fact that becouse of some incidents in my youth my despise for religion and most religious people is infinite.
@Moral Hazard: The sad thing is that some people dont get it. Jahowas whitnesses for instance arent so bad, even though they still raise my blood pressure every time they ring my doorbell, after they hand out their leaflets they usualy leave. Its the random people on the street that come up to you and spew holly bullshit that piss me off. For instance, one lovely warm sunny sunday morning my friend an i are sitting at a cafe sipping our lemonade and discussing things of no importance when a random middle aged couple comming from the church starts attacking us saying that we sat there for a whole hour drinking instead of going to the church and listening to the word of god, and that if we continoue on the path we are now we would die and go to hell and good people like them will go to heaven. Needles to say that my friend way like while i tried to decide if i should throw my glass of lemonade straight into their faces. i didnt becouse it was to delicious.
Another random incident. I dont know how its called in english but it was one of those days in the year when good christians shoudnt eat meat. Well i was working my ass off the whole day and i decided i deserved a big greasy hamburger. I stop off at the nearest fast food place and take the hamburger back to my car. Half way trough it, a mother with hear about 5 year old doughter comes by, and the little brat points at me and asks her mom why cant she eat meat today if i can. At that moment the mother goes fucking mental. Accusing me of being a bad influence on her child for letting her see me doing such disgusting thing in public (wtf i was eating a cheeseburger) when i should werry well know that becouse christ didnt eat meat i also shoudnt. The she proceded to ask me just what kind of a christian am i and when i told her i wasnt one she grabbed her doughter and slowly backed away like i was some sort of ax vielding murderer.
This next one is one of my favourites. And old lady was collecting money for the church and asked me if i would donate some. In the most polite voice i could manage i told her that im not religious, i dont care about the church and that judging by the fact that i saw the priest driving around in a brand new Audi A6 3.0d a few days ago that the church is anything but broke as she claims. If they want money to renovate it, let the priest sell the audi and buy himself a yugo. She was following me for 10 minutes yelling at the top of her voice that i am a satans follower, a demon a damned sould and that she hopes i burn in hell for eternity. Eventualy though two cops who actualy saw the whole thing decided that fun was over and they asked her to be quiet or she will be locked up for disturbing the peace. |
Those are generally people who have no clue what the heck they are doing.. sad.

This thread really supports the stereotype that the irreligious are pricks with sanctimonious attitudes. For every answer you can prove that there is a god, you can proove there isn't and vice versa. Now you can tell me that most Christians are pricks too, but this isn't true, just as you and I know that most people who aren't religious aren't pricks also. You guys make it seem like people who are part of a religion are all bad people which isn't true. There are bad people, and there will always be bad people, black, white, atheist, jew, buddhist, whatever.
For every bad story you have with a christian, I too can tell you a bad experience with one. I can also tell you bad experiences I have with irreligious people, but I am not going to tell them. I would just be another irreligious person on the internet who thinks everyone is intellectually inferior to me.

That's what I love about aethiests, their smug attitude, especially when dealing with those who are religious. You can live believing in God, refuting Darwinism and believe the Earth is the center of the universe and still lead a fullfilled life. The problems arise when people from both ends of the spectrum try to impose their beliefs on the other.

Re: what's the point of 'prayer'?

It is the remnant of age-old divisions of psychological and governmental systems, created for several reasons (trade, control, expansion, war, illness, conceptualization of the misunderstood).
It is possible that back when people didn't have the common things we have today, such as antibiotics (just one example of how the various subsystems of this world interact as part of each other, in this case mold and the human 'immune system').
They were supersticious, and they prayed, and *sometimes* coincidence provided backup for prayer.
There is also placebo effect... it is a very real medical mystery. The human mind, given placebo effect under right conditions, can sometimes have very real and positive impacts on a person's situation and health.
