So if I tell you the SHM sound is old and played-out, does that mean that I'm hating on it because it's popular, or am I simply stating my personal opinion?

I think that too is a poor arguement. I agree, it doesn't go anywhere, but thank god for djs and their ability to make 2 hours+ of music sound like one track. Put in the proper place and edited down to <3 minutes and I think you have a nice track towards the beggining of a set or mix. Now, I think it is a terrible starter, but I think that's a given. You want something to pull you in, to interest you, while being "safe". That is at least my opinion when it comes to opening tracks.
Now, don't get me wrong. I am not a defender of this track. I saw how high it was on beatport and was shocked. But, as I said before I see how it could play a nice role in a mix, while I think you'd have to be on something to think it'd really shine.
Oh, and by the way, a bit off topic, but as far as opening tracks go I really think Dirty South- Get Down would be a sick opener, at least if you are heading in the electro direction, while leaving yourself open for some Marine Party (Freelands label, do I have the name right?) type stuff.
