It's generic name is "SAMOGON" wich is abbreviation for Self-Made. It is similar to moonshine. There are many other names it's given, like HANKA, TABURETOVKA (woodgrain alchohol based moonshine), KLUKOVKA (kurrant), etc. As I mentioned earlier, Taburetovka is made from woodgrain alchohol. During Gorbachev era prohibition, many russian drunkards would go as far as drinking parfume/cologne (since it contains alchohol) - which was very cheap in those times.

Russian Samogon is considered part of history and culture of russian drinking. Some very rare batches of it can be very good (like mead) but most of it is awful and will fuck you up in more ways than you can count. Simply because ingredients are inpure, crude, and inconsistent. Some of it can be so bad, you'd fry your liver. However, considering that many remote villages don't have easy access to liquor stores but plenty of access to sugar (key ingredient), starch, industrial alchohol, etc - they resort to making their own booze.

BTW, my vote for crappiest booze goes to

1. Gordon Vodka

2. Watermellon Liquer (can't remember - putridly sweet and awful)

3. Baileys - like drinking sweet lard, even diluted with coffee

4. Sambucca - how can anyone drink licorice-tasting crap is beyond me

5. Scorppio vodka - bought a bottle, it had scorpion in it (that was a poor decision to begin with). In absolute booze draught decided to give it a try. It was soo nasty I couldn't drink it even mixed with red bull and bunch of other liquers. Poored entire bottle down the sink. Somewhere, russian drunkards were weeping in horror and anger.
