I *heart* CZ.

Finally after years of being on the fence.

Wish I was at that Lee party on saturday though, he's prolly the most underrated international act, IMO.

Round 1

Review time!

Wasn't supposed to make it to this event, but I'm very appreciative that the party I was supposed to attend was cancelled. Got to Footwork a bit early, 11:30ish, since I was too excited to stick around at home. Once again, Footwork surprises me with it's design scheme and layout. I can't stress enough how awesome this place has shaped up to be over the past year. It was the perfect atmosphere; incredibly dark and moody! It's no System Soundbar, but it's definately got the same vibe, especially considering that the crowd was fucking awesome! Smiling faces, sketch factor at a minimum, and people going mental everywhere. The staff is the most friendliest I have encountered! The sound was decent, but could be better. The lighting was kept dim for most of the night, which was perfectly suitable. It didn't feel like a TA party either (thank god)...more like a collaboration of TAs, HAs and Tribers. Since I was in total awe, I couldn't leave the place until it was over, at about 5ish.

Lee Osbourne never fails to impress me. This guy is the devil who helped me to fall in love with the minimal sound last year, when he opened for Miss Kitten. I hadn't seen him since, and I was glad that things haven't changed. His opening set was too good! In fact, I could even state that it was just as good as the main headliner. Really awesome tech house and a bit of minimalism. His track programming was like a novel; everything flowed so well, almost as if it was pre-recorded...which it wasn't! It progressed perfectly into Burridge's set. Most of the Toronto locals ain't got nothing on this guy...He's got my support!

Lee Burridge...hmm..I came to Footwork with pretty average expectations, totally forgetting how awesome he was at Decadence and how much I loved an earlier set of his. Let's just say...Burridge jumped up on my deejay ranking list. His set was messed up! Yea..like...it was M-E-N-T-A-L! He delivered everything I had wanted to hear plus more! Kind of hard to classify exactly what he played, but he dropped a whole lot of minimal techno and minimal progressive, some tech house, and a few chuggy electro tunes! YES! I went mental the whole night...couldn't keep my feet off the ground, and couldn't stop smiling. He started off his set with a very ambient clicky song with samples of birds churping. Funny thing is...I used to have this track, but deleted it because of the bird noises, hah. But hearing it live...was trippy! I think the song is by Anthony Collins on The Bird EP...but not sure which track exactly. I actually was able to ID quite a handful of songs...which happened to be favs of mine. Particularly, I went into overdrive mode to the following tracks:

Middlefinger - The Scream
Gabriel Ananda - Dopplewhipper
Sebo K - Horizons

<3 Holy tunage! But there was one song that topped it all...it just so happened to be one of the best minimal/tech house tunes of the year...

Lemon8 - Model8 (Lemon8 Remix)!!!!!!

OMG! I hadn't heard that tune since Misstress B and Loco Dice back in March. I remember when I first heard the tune and didn't know what it was called...and I named it the "Wolfcry Song." Bwahaha...it's because there's a constant wolf cry throughout the tune. AMAZING! Hearing it at Footwork was an experience in itself. I think I lost one of my lungs failed after that moment lol.

I can't really say which hour I liked best, since it all sounded like clicks and beeps to me...which was lovely.

Definately one of the top 5 sets and parties of the year for me! Lee Squared FTW! If Footwork continues to book these awesome deejays, then I think I might just make it my apartment...since Sonic is my 2nd home. I had a blast partying with the TAs, and others who were present. And this was just round 1 for me this weekend...

OK so I guess it's time for a proper review.

I had really high expectations going into this party. This was, afterall, my first oppurtunity in almost FIVE years to finally experience Burridge the way he's meant to be experienced; in a small, dark room. I've seen him at Guvernment, but it just isn't the same. Nor is the Kool Haus. I checked him out at System once, but the crowd was garbage. No vibe whatsoever. Anyways, like I said going into this parties my expectations were pretty high. If I wasn't telling myself how much it was going to rock, someone else was. Normally getting this hyped about a party would be a bad thing, because rarely do DJ's live up to an incredible amount of hype...but who are we kidding here? It's Lee Burridge afterall. There's a reason why he's been my number 1 or 2 DJ all this time. And considering how stale the music has been getting lately: this was almost guaranteed to be a unique and unforgettable experience.

Upon entering the club, the first thing I noticed was the similarity to System. The vibe Footwork has going totally reminds of it. It's dark, it's got a weird layout...and everyone there has a smile on their face, just having a good time. I loved the fact that there's seats right beside the dancefloor so one can easily take a break but still be in the party. It wasn't until I went to Footwork that I noticed most clubs nowadays have "chillout" spots to the side, well out of the party. This is a total buzzkill for someone who just wants to let their legs rest for a bit but still be a part of the whole party vibe.

I got there around 11.30 I think, and Lee Osbourne was just warming the place up. I gotta say that I really enjoyed his set. It was the first time I heard him and he did a great job leading into Burridge's own set. I spent most of the Osbourne's set just socializing and saying hi to everyone I knew there (which was a small number).

Finally, around 1AM, Burridge came on. I think by the second track all of my expectations were already being blown away, but I can't remember much of what was going on. The music was just SOOOO good that I lost track of everything around me. Time ceased to exist. All I remember is 4 hours of dirty, bleepy, techy, bumpy beats. Every time I'd want to go out for a smoke, Burridge would drop another twisted bassline that would drag me back on the dancefloor. Actually, I never did make it outside because the music was that good. Only quick washroom breaks to refill my water bottle, but even then I had to wait for a good moment to leave.

Finally, after 4 hours of this madness...the music stops and everyone yells for an encore, which they got. Burridge throws something on (I know the track he played, but can't remember the name) and dances with the remainder of people on the dancefloor, with the biggest smile on his face. After this we hung out at Footwork for a bit, before heading over to the Zone for Burridge's followup. Unfortunately we didn't get in, and instead waited for about an hour in line before giving up and heading home.

This was definately THE party of the year for me; with a few really close ones right behind it. And I can't wait to go back to Footwork.
