It makes me feel good because I've done something kind.
A lot of people take this position, however, I think that they are mistaken. If it makes one feel good to make another person happy or to do a kind act then one is not doing the act for unselfish reasons (at least not wholely for unselfish reasons). Most people (IMO) give gifts because it makes them feel good to make someone happy... but ask yourself; are you doing it to make them happy or to make yourself feel good for making them happy? If you felt no satisfaction in pleasing others would you try? If you take pleasure in the giving then is it really for the other person's sake or your own?
Jenny, this isn't meant to pick on you but your post is consistant with how may view the giving of gifts.

Oh fuck off. I'm sick of you imposing your "beliefs" onto MY thoughts and challenging what I say. That's what I said, that's what I meant. Yeah I WOULD do it if I felt no satisfaction in it, that's what generosity is to me. I'm sorry it's so hard for you to believe that selfless people exist...but they do.
Kudos on tyring to play Devil's Advocate though.

i see moral's point. we like to "give" because it makes the other person like us and adore us more. haha
is that what u were getting at moral?

Yeah I don't doubt a lot of people do that, but I'm not one of those people, and I don't need Moral trying to "correct" my thoughts. It's goddamn annoying as hell. The world doesn't need another know-it-all.

What I was getting at was that we like to give because it makes us feel good, if it didn't we probably wouldn't give gifts. Assuming I'm right that would mean we give gifts for our own satisfaction not to satisfy others.

as smart as you are moral, i do see a pattern in you always assuming (or trying to make people believe) that they are like you, fault-wise. basically, the way you are is how EVERYONE is...especially when we get into conversations about being honest or loyal or whatever...i've noticed that. i think maybe it makes you feel better to convince yourself that you're not alone in your character flaws?
i still love you though.

I honestly give for the sake of giving. I like buying people nice things and don't really care about what they get me nor am I looking for them to like me better. If they like me for me that's great, if not at least I put a smile on their face with a nice gift.
I also tend not to concentrate too much on special occasions to get certain friends/S.O gifts. I think random acts make people more happy than when they are expecting to receive something.
