Some words and stuff...
If I hold out any longer, I may forget about my thoughts and experiences, so I must write a proper review now.
I had been hyping this event ever since I first heard the rumours about Adam Beyer playing in Toronto. I felt a little bit over-confident which led to some disappointment, but overall, it was a pretty good night.
Mmm red wine! Me and Jenners made our way to 99 Sudbury after a mini shitshow at her hotel room. After hiding in a closet and trying to scare her on more than one occasion, we figured it was time to get more sloshed. To my surprise, the taxi driver had no problems finding the place; no questions were asked. I found that quite strange... It was located in a good secluded area which was expected. We got in at about 12:30ish with no hassles; we weren't IDed and they didn't make an effort with the body searching...not that I'm complaining . Staff was extremely friendly and courteous. As we walked into the big room, I had flashbacks from my experience at Wallace Studios. The space at 99 Sudbury was very similar...typical abandoned warehouse! It had a very underground feel, and I knew I was going to love partying there. The decorations were cool, especially the candlebras which made it look like some vampire's lair . The crowd was older, sketchy but knew how to handle their 'enhancements', and really down to earth. In fact, I recognized alot of people from an earlier Wallace Studios party. Best vibe EVER! Tons of good dancers, which was refreshing and a bit intimidating, and smiles everywhere. Like I mentioned before, they had one green lazer that shot at a disco ball, reflecting the light into many little green squares. I had some fun trying to 'hold' them in my hand haha. Sound was a bit low and not clear enough to fully enjoy the tuneage, but it sufficed; the perfect spot was smack in the middle. I failed to mention that it was my first time...and for every firsts, there are also flaws. The cement flooring was wet, DIRTY, and very slippery. I actually took a wipeout at one point which was pretty embarassing, and as I got up I was covered in the filth...I was literally a dirty clown! lmao..which would have been even more emphasized if I had chosen to wear my costume. Thank god I didn't! Heat was also an issue for me. I rarely get tired on regular occassions, but my body does not handle heat well, and I get tired very easily when I'm drenched with sweat. The place was a sauna because of how packed it was, but it got cooler after 4 am when it started to clear out...so it wasn't that bad. If it wasn't for these factors, I would have enjoyed the party so much more. I still managed to rock it out, hard, and harder, and even HARD. lol.
The music and set(s) are what really made my night. I caught about less than an hour of Jamie Kidd, but it took me really long to adjust to the vibe of the party and to sober up for me to notice what was going on and being played. Sadly, I have nothing to say about his set but my friends kept exclaiming how awesome it was.
Close to 2 am, Adam Beyer played a surprising set as many have mentioned before. He's my 3rd favourite deejay in the whole world, being a huge fan of his productions and remixers. On top of it all, it was my first time getting the privilege to check him out, and I was expecting a very minimalistic set with a few hard bangers here and there...but the actual outcome was reversed. I must say, I was a little bit disappointed because it wasn't what I expected, but for the most part, the set was unbelieveable! His mixing was a bit sloppy a few times, but not that noticeable. He delivered an earth shaking symphony of rock slides and explosions through the means of music. Lots of goodies! Hard banging techno with craters of softer filler tunes all around. I heard a few of his productions, including a bunch of older stuff and some new stuff. I thought this kind of techno was dying? Beyer totally proved that theory wrong! The whole room was on fire, feet kicking at the air, never hitting the ground. Everyone was going nuts, dancing like they were beating someone up...that someone was the floor! There was a sad little clown...I forget his name, and he had his little ice cream cone, but it was missing his favourite topping.. minimal *sniff* My buddy George (Fuertez) had just left, and he and I were both talking about how it would make our night....and he figured that Beyer would drop that after he left.. 10 minutes after George left, that little clown had a huge smile on his face! It was around 5 am, and Beyer switched it up a bit. Oh yes! YES! Fuck yes? YES! I don't even have to say what it was...wait, I do! Minimal! He continued to play that until he ended at around 6 am. I was just getting started, and I couldn't stop grooving to the deeper beats. I was pleased, but it would have been awesome if he played for 2 more hours. I thought he was; Adam Beyer was smiling so much, which was probably because he had an awesome night. He knew he played a great set!
I was able to ID a few tunes but there weren't really any that stood out. Everything was just good.
Audion - Mouth To Mouth ...played by Jamie Kidd
Joris Voorn - Mpx309
Oliver Klein - Al Quadus
Alexi Delano - Echolocation
Adam Beyer - Stereotypes
Ch00ns! ^^
Adam Beyer's Set > The Party
I had a good time, and I loved 99 Sudbury. I was looking forward to the next night there with Trentemoller..and it was a much more clean and enjoyable night...but I'll leave that for my other review. Loved partying with my Clowns, who were almost in full force (the males at least). Also loved rocking it out with the fellow TAs who were there. You guys are hardcore! Never saw this much insanity on the dance floor from you guys <3. It's a shame this place is closing down, after I just decided I'd make it my 'basement' (since I already have a '2nd home', and a 'condo' lol.) I look forward to more parties from Platform though. Kudos to phawn and crew!
