Is it really? You'd really be willing to put the AVERAGE soldier's IQ up against the AVERAGE college grad's? Like I said, there are tons of intelligent soldiers, but to deny that someone who doesn't do well in high school/college has a greater chance of ending up in Iraq (if not from a rich, supportive family) than a college grad does is just not looking at reality.

we're not (Kerry and i are not anyway) talking about differences in IQ post-grad or undergrad for that matter.

not only is that an argument you cannot quantify, but it's not even essential to Kerry's argument that Bush will send you to Iraq if you don't study.

if you believe it is then equate IQ to to taking the SAT then ask how many soldiers have taken the SAT prior to enlisting. you'll prolly find that to be a very small percentage compared to soldiers who haven't as well as finding that of those tested, actually scored either average or higher than average percentiles. any soldier that scored lower than average has made your case and you and Kerry are welcome to put them on whatever pedestal you'd like.

i would rather be of the opinion that most kids who join the military join because of college subsidies in hopes of AFFORDING college as opposed to FAILING college. i know i did and just about everyone i knew in my 10 yrs. serving did as well.

first youre assuming that kids who don't study or test well or are generally not collegiate end up joining the military and while that may be true for a very small percentage thats still pretty offencive. your entitled to you opnion of course.

THE TROOPS ANSWER KERRY: UPDATE

This picture -- and the story behind it -- is drawing incredible attention, and not just on the internet.

It was posted on the Drudge Report; and we have received inquiries about it from media outlets from across the country. As one national reporter told me, this is becoming a very big story.

I'll give you an update Thursday.

This is what I told a reporter from a New York newspaper: "I posted it because it was a pretty clear indication that the troops pay attention to what they hear back home. They heard what Kerry send and they wanted to let him know exactly what they thought of it. Pretty effective comeback I think.

"Kerry can try to spin this with political folks back home. But the picture suggests he'd have a tough time spinning it to the guys in Iraq."

I'm not assuming that. There are lots of people who don't study or test well who don't end up in the military. Like I said before, though, joining is a pretty good option if that's the case, as it's not a bad career, so long as the nation's not constantly at war.

If you do poorly in high-school or drop out of college or have very limited options, the military can be a great opportunity. HOwever, it's also often a first choice among mane people who are more than qualified to do many other things. It seems like most comments in here seem to want to deride the military as a choice of last resort when that is simply not the case. It's a terrible generalization that is also a false generalization.

Why is it so hard to believe that a lot of people might actually want a career in the military no matter what their education level or qualifications?

In assuming that from my comments, you're doing the same thing the Republicans want you to think about Kerry. I definitely never said that it's a last resort and completely realize that there are many very intelligent people who choose it as their first choice. But there are many people for whom it is a last choice. Let's put it this way, the military has a wider spectrum of intelligence than most other career paths.

for the record, there are a lot of people, civilian and military, past and present, that wasn't suprised about what Kerry said near as much as that he actually said it.

like i said earlier in this thread this goes back several decades.

That and a lot of people who go into the army do it so they can get some kind of university education which would otherwise be denied too them because they simply dont have the exorbitant amounts of money too fund it. Theres more to it than just running around with guns, most of the technical people have some kind of higher education because of it and most of the officers are as well.
It's definately a better option than joining say a police force or large corporation and working your way up from the bottom of the pit in the hope you'll gain some education out it.

All's said and done, its not the be all and end all of making something of yourself. Plenty of people out there do well with no university education.

aye!! you are correct, not everyone had a rich daddy or mommy to pay for college, books and a car. Some of us took the option to go serve and take advantage of the help the GI bill gave us. Then some of us were given the choice to go due to beating the shit out of ...hold for it shaolin_Z,,,,,,, a couple of racist rednecks and the redneck's uncle judge gave us the choice to either go to jail or military.
So i served.....got out of getting rail roaded and gotz me an edumecation....
True though, I did run into a couple of idiots in the Navy, mostly officers, but .....
