I saw a Nintendo WII commercial for the first time tonight on TV...forgot what game was being advertised, but that shit looked sick! And the use of the 2 different controllers, now THAT'S innovation!

well, jupiterone, i certainly think you have a point re the graphics. unfortunately thats how games sell, and has pretty much been that way since the SNES & megadrive. i just think its hard to expect games to reinvent the wheel each release. writing games (as im sure you would know) isnt easy. they need to pay attention to other thigns than graphics, but really, the further we go, the harder it is for anyone to do anything remotely "new".

You might be able to even reach back further with this one.

I'd go as far as to say that the Atari days were the start of it all.

nah, the atari didnt really have any competition. well, unless you count the very first "console" i owned, which was just a game of pong, and nothing else!

And yet, it was a push for graphics with the various iterations of the Atari console. The birth of a monster, I tells ya!

I have to agree. The storyline and gameplay should come first, not the graphics. Having good graphics is good and quite enjoyable when lots of systems can run them. If you can run a game at max res then good on you. That's great. The major problem is when devs substitute quality for graphics. It's all about graphics now. I don't care how good something looks. If the story is shithouse or it doesn't play well then it's a bad game.

This is where games like Deus Ex, Half Life, Neverwinter Nights etc excel. It's story and gameplay first, graphics second

An extremely important detail seems to be forgotten.

As far as I see it the innovations from times past on the nintendo and sega systems were purely japanese product. The games were based on concepts that were foreign to the idea of fun as perceived in the rest of the world.

As mass marketing of video games grew more and more titles have become designed by companies in Europe and the USA. They significantly lack the crazy side that Japan offered, or for lack of a more detailled explanation, they are not standing on the sideline offering a different and fresh view of gaming.

The market has also grown into a billion dollar industry and companies are unwilling to take risks on innovative gameplay which could result in financial loses.

Lastly take into account the regionality of the gaming systems.
Xbox has the largest market share in the United States, Sony in Europe, Nintendo in Japan.
As I mentionned before the crazy aspect of japanese games mostly came through the Nintendo platform. With the regionality of the systems there is simply no space for Nintendo "crazy" to make it around the world ( well currently the only thing they have is the DS ... let's see how the Wii turns out ).
