I have a lot of respect for your opinion Neil and don't take offense to what you write. I hope the feeling is mutual. While I agree with some of what you are saying, there are some things I see different. I agree with you that the trance scene isn't as good in Miami as it once was. I have been around since before the days of Shadow Lounge so I've seen it first hand more than you are assuming I have. Does this mean that we should all stop listening to trance and stop attending trance events because it's not the coolest thing to do anymore? You refer to there being young people at the trance events like it's a negative thing and say "and the room is mildly full at best with a bunch of kids who share waters and cant drink." Don't you realize that these young people may be the future of the trance scene. Everyday that goes by, they get a day older. Soon they will be able to drink, spend money at the bar and make the club owners happy. The trance scene may be going through a lul at the moment. But with the addition of some new players, all working towards the same goal, things can change. For example Victor Dinaire is moving here in January. He will be a great addition to Miami. His radio shows reach millions of listeners each week. Suzy is also getting more and more popular with each track release and with each performance. Combine Suzy and Victor's contacts and watch out. Miami's talented locals who play trance are also not going to give up the fight. We are all working together to build something. If we continue to play great music, have friendly people at our events, get some actual promotion, the numbers will increase. If they don't it's still more satisfying to try than to stand on the sidelines and be a naysayer.

im not going to argue semantics, but space used to do gay nite on friday. when they stopped doing that im sure they figured an occasional trance nite on fridays with insert big name dj here____ would be profitable, but those friday nites r far from packed, imo, and like i said packed with kids who share waters and arent old enough to drink, im sure they churn a decent profit, but nothing mind blowing.

notice that its glaringly obvious that when it became apparent that booking a trance act on saturday wasnt anymore profitable than playing the resident, they ceased doing so. and unless its a special event they never book anybody on friday, because its cheaper to stay closed. it would make no sense for them to do two house days for the whole weekend hence the moniker "saturdays belong to space", and would dilute his regulars who would spread themselves out over the two nites. doenst make sense to have two nites with same theme. i doubt he even wants to be open most fridays, and the proof is in the pudding. and to say if he brought in a morillo, kleinenberg, or a sanchez on a friday and that place wouldnt be packed is frivolous at best.

the reason why its gets alot of resistence from promoters and owners is because the genre overall is produces alot of shit right now, and doesnt bring in the type of crowd they want. hence ferry venturing into electro and tiesto being tiesto. and howdy doody and ronald mcdonald dont play at space on saturday nites, oscar g and cedric gervais do, 2 HIGHLY respected djs around the globe, u really missed the mark on that one. to say that could put any too schmucks on the decks and anybody would just showup is disingenuous at best. they built those nites, a dj really has to know how to control the room at space, otherwise that room will clear out faster than a bombthreat at a middleshool. trust me, ive seen it happen. nice shot kiddo

Bri, i feel u on that, but until the trance productions turn the corner, and we have less of all this cheesy, generic, supersaw riff garbage coming out it wont matter one iota. i would still listen to trance if there was still alot of good stuff out there, but there isnt. and its not because my taste have changed, its trance thats changed, and not for the better, i still listen to my old sets all the time. trance is suffering an identity crisis right now, hopefully it turns the corner. im not a naysayer, just a realist and if victer moved here, u and suzy should do so also!! like u said there needs to be more of a trance prescene here, the scene here really took a hit when markus left space.

Mattivi I have no idea how long you've been going to Space. But when it first started in March of 2000 it was the middle of the trance heyday. And for about a year they had Edgar V doing trance on both nights. First it was Trancemissions on Friday night, and afterhours Saturday (because it was gay early). Then about a month into it they scrapped the gay theme altogether and it was trance both nights, and nothing took away from the packed crowds on both nights. If house is as strong as everyone says it is, they could do it both nights. But the fact is that EDM in general, not just trance, is much weaker now. Hence LP cannot do house both nights because as you say it will take away from the Saturday turnout, which is proof of that fact in-and-of-itself. Open format and hip-hop are bigger than house and will take over completely soon if fans of EDM do not stop bickering about which sub-sub-sub genre of EDM is best to the exclusion of all others.

And there is a lot of shit productions in all genres, whether it be trance, house, techno, etc. The trick is to find DJs that know what they are doing and playing.

And Ronald McDonald or Howdy Doody would have been better than the crap hip-hop they were actually playing in the RAM-PACKED mainroom @ Space this Saturday. Which proves my point. Nobody left. And when Donald Glaude showed up and dropped the shit set of the century that mainroom was packed as fuck. No one at all ran for the hills or left.

And BTW no disrespect to Oscar or Cedric was ever intended by me. They are very good at what they do. Yet people in this city are like sheep, and the whole herd of them will follow in whatever direction a club like Space takes them. Hence Space could make any DJ or genre they put in there on Saturday big. I remember when they made Cedric a resident. Many people said that would mark the end of Space, that he could not even blow up while @ Crobar, what is Space thinking, etc etc. Look at him now, with a little help from the exposure Space gave him he's become huge.

Either way, I respect everyone's opinions on these matters and getting back on topic I just hope that the people that threw this party are not deterred from continuing to do so. My initial advice stands, change venues because Shitropolis will not help your cause.

And yes there will be trance this Saturday at muthafuckin Space.

Hey guys! Wow I didn't realize there were so many posts in this thread. I'm pressed for time, so I didn't get a chance to read it all. If I leave anything out or repeat anything, please forgive me.

I'd like to say first off, thanks to the people who came out showed their support. I'm really embarrassed about the whole situation. This type of thing normally doesn't happen at my gigs. I had a good talk with the promoter and the new owner of the club. They're really pissed off at the guy who kicked everyone out of the Adrenaline room. They want to do what it takes to make things right. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither will a scene. Now that I've bought a house here and I have my own production studio in town, I have the option of being able to stay local and help out the scene. Personally, I'm tired of there only being the same top 5 trance DJs coming around. I'd like to be able to help my friends like Matt Darey, Mike Koglin, Scott Bond, Thomas Bronzwaer, Terry Bones, etc get more bookings in FL. I'd also like for there to be more club options than just Space, but just sitting here and talking about it isn't going to do anything. We should make things happen, and if it doesn't work out, then at least we tried and had a damn good time doing it.

Yeah, I know how small Blue is, and that the money may not be what I'm accustomed to. If there's people who want to hear trance, whether it's 5 people or 5,000, then I'll go rock it for them:-) Like I said, because I'm producing in central FL now, I have the option of doing more local things.

Its sad how we talk about Space as been the only force that can make things happen in the scene in general, sad but to a great extent true. I too saw the days of glorious trance glaring out of South BEach. Heck South Beach perception back in the days was all about the techno clubs ( cause thats what people called anything electronic music related ). Its interesting how before, when there was a lot less exposure to EDM, trance in general, DSL was just starting to been introduced, and NAPSTER was reaching its great times, and it was power 96 who exposed trance to the masses, and to think that by then Trance was already kicking all over SoBe and even places in Ft. Lauderdale and elsewhere. Now that the exposure its major in every way, all of that its gone and dead.
I agree 100% that productions have a lot to do with it. If you have a DJ play all the old skool trance tunes, I can almost guarantee people will eat it up nicely and create awesome nights with it. The thing with those great productions was that people loved the feeling and memories those left on each night they went and partied.Today's trance lacks a lot of that, which at the end makes it harder to leave anything memorable. But like Av1 said, it also falls upon a DJ to play the right stuff, and that we are lacking too.
There is great great great talent out there, but all of that talent its overshadow by 4 Dj's. PvD, Tiesto, Armin and Ferry. If it werent for this DJ's, we wouldnt get any trance ( and thank god for our great locals .. TA"s included for feeding us the choons when we need it ).

What I think is that things just got too big. Space got big, forcing it to take different, profitable direction. The market got saturated, so much that to an extent it has hurted the scene. We all remember the Old Space right?!?!.. if we compare it to the new space, there's no comparison, the other one would leak and what not, but you can not argue the Vibe that was felt in there, the darkness, the feeling, and ofcourse, the great productions that were coming out that point in time which made it even more special, and those were some of the ingridients for trance successs.. sadly, a lot of those ingredients arent even there anymore. At the end, sometimes I feel it should go a bit underground, that way the bad stuff gets filtered out.
Aight I dont know if this fits any of what its been talked but I had this thoughts floating around.

i agree that edm as a whole is suffering here, but house is still the dominant force in the edm market here in miami TODAY. and i agree wholeheartedly with felipe that the environment and vibe of the old space was much better suited for the nuances of trance. whatever, everybody is making some valid points, the dance scene is just like life, always changing, evolving, edm darwinism in full effect.

Yet whenever they do open on a Friday night it is to bring in name trance DJs. The reason why is simple, because those are the only DJs that can bring heads into Space consistently on an off-night like Friday. And this way LP doubles his profit. They never have dared to even risk bringing a name house DJ to a Friday night party @ Space, why not?? They only bring them on Saturdays when the club is packed even if Howdy-Doody or Ronald McDonald is playing. Maybe because they know that at the end of the day the trance DJs will better fill the club on a Friday night, which lacks any established following. In fact they tried a house afterhours at Space on Fridays when the new location first opened, and it failed miserably. So trance is not dead at all, nor is the scene. It is just facing a lot of resistance from clubs & promoters in MIA, and a fanbase which often-times is too busy arguing amongst itself about the most un-important issues rather than supporting trance DJs that have tried to stay loyal to the genre. The old skool trance was definitely phat. B and I still sometimes play our classic records on "Solar Power Sessions." We've noticed that some trance music these days are either too commercial or too boring... BUT there are also really awesome new tracks coming out. This year, I'm seeing alot of really phat trance promos every day, alot of which reminds me of my favorite old skool tunes. If the locals don't get to hear these new or classic tunes that veer on the underground, how do they know they don't like it unless someone played it for them? The only way to find out is to make an attempt to educate them.

A good example is when I played at the music conference and I made some new fans who live in Miami. They asked me what kind of music was that, they'd never heard it before. I told them trance, and they were surprised. They only trance they'd ever heard was on the radio and they didn't care for the commercial stuff. There's tons of potential new fans out there just waiting to get enlightened. They're just not getting exposed to the good trance.

Imma have to disagree with you there sir The music here is anything "BUT" evolving . It probably would evolve if everyone wasnt so closeminded and act more like sheep then humans. Its a fact that even if a Dj noone knows plays at Space on a Saturday its gonna get jam packed no matter what. If you got a trance Dj to play at Space on a Saturday id bet a million bucks you will see the same musically challenged drunks and crackheads as you'd see on an Oscar G night. The people that go on a Friday for a known Dj go cuz of advertising.

Blue may not be the biggest venue, but you gotta do something somewhere. Myself along with Koky and the crew try to do our best and have a trance party at a well known "house" only venue. Some of you may not know it, but Blue is known as a locals house music club. Our 2 year anniversary is coming up in January, the only successful trance party at SoBe that anyone knows of at this point in time. So making a comment that a place is as big as your closet doesn't help any.

2006 is coming to an end, hopefully 2007 will be better for us all and the trance scene as a whole will be better and brighter

Friday nights also are known to be crappy for any club even space ... If not ? Why doesnt Space have a successfull Friday night "HOUSE" party ? Luis P is no dummy. He knows house music wouldnt even fill that club up halfway on a Friday. Yet Trance acts are forced to suffer on Fridays and then the music itself is blamed. He knows the only thing he can do to fill that place up on a Friday is have guys like Ferry , Armin , Tiesto or PVD on a Friday to be succesfull. Theres no other way to do it and thats a fact. Tell him to have a local dj night at space and im sure it will fail just as if he had any other genre playing that night . Facts are facts. Trance definately isnt the problem in this town . I guarantee you that It gets a bit more complicated and would be better talked or argued about in person .. So we'll leave it at that
