HD-DVD will kill the blu-ray, no fucking doubt about that.

Cheaper players, cheaper fabrication process and cheaper media will always win against more expensive technologies, even if they're superior.

tru dat, tru dat. Let's not forget the ever infamous "Betamax", "Memory Stick", "MD" (minidisk).... I guess Sony never friggin learns...

"The VHS format's defeat of the Betamax format became a classic marketing case study, now identified with the verbal phrase "to Betamax", wherein a proprietary technology format is overwhelmed in the market by a format allowing multiple, competing, licensed manufacturers. Sony's confidence in its ability to dictate an industry standard backfired when JVC, and parent Matsushita, made the tactical decision to forego Sony's offer of Betamax in favour of JVC's VHS technology. They felt that it would end up like U-Matic deal: Sony dominating, and they get the scraps. By 1984, forty companies utilized the VHS format in comparison with Beta's twelve. Sony finally conceded defeat in 1988 when it too began producing VHS recorders. However, Sony may be said to have had some small consolation in this saga as its Video-8 small-format videotape is essentially a scaled-down version of the Betamax, and Video-8 dominated the home camcorder format for the next 15 years with the rival VHS-C format only gaining a small market share before both formats were rendered obsolete by the digital MiniDV standard."

and...

"A multitude of technical drawbacks along with the proprietary nature of the Betamax format hurt it in its competition with VHS, in spite of the Betamax's superior video quality. Other proprietary formats from Sony, such as MiniDisc, MemoryStick, UMD, ATRAC and Blu-ray, have since been similarly criticized."

BLEW RAY will be yet another item on Sony's long list of superior technological devices that have flopped. You figure after all these years they'd learn. Oh well.... IBM thought so too. Look where they are now in terms of PC sales (not counting my favorite ThinkPad - which DOES RULE. tHE ONly IBM product that I can say safely "it doesn't suck")... The name alone will cause it to fail miserably in Southern US. I can see it now, redneck at walmart: "Um, do you have "BLEW RAY" version of 'Days of Thunder'?" - "Um... sir, I don't think anyone BLEW RAY in DAYS OF THUNDER. Could I possibly interest you in a 'Brokeback Mountain'?"

or

- "Hey Billy-Bob, I got that nifty BLEW RAY in PEE-ASS 3!"
- "Eww Bobby Joe, don't tell me you're one of them homosexuals that watches them gay movies with pissing!"

it will happen. I guarantee it.

I don't know much about blu-ray, but I agree in so far as Sony has a stupidly short-sighted approach to developing technologies. It's a real pity, because proprietary issues aside, they are capable of producing some nice devices. I don't know whether it's their greed or their music and movie production subsidiaries that drive them to proprietary formats, but either way it harms their bottom line.

greed?
quote:

1. Betamax vs. VHS -

JVC: Hey! We've got this new video format that we can release movies on for home video! Anyone wanna get in on it? No licensing fees and the casettes are easy to produce!
Sony: We've got a better format! Screw JVC and their VHS. Our Betamax offers much better picture and sound which is what these new people called "Home Theater Enthusiasts will like!"
Industry: Betamax sounds great to us. That and VHS will offer the possibility of copying movies. It'll be the downfall of the industry. Fuck VHS.
Sony: Yeah. Now let's talk about royalties for every cassette and player sold.
Industry: So how about that VHS?
Consumers with Betamax: Grumble, grumble, grumble.

2. Minidisc

Sony: Hey! We've got this new audio format! It's small, compact, is relatively skip free and the quality is just as good as a standard compact disc!
Industry: Sounds great! People are always complaining about discs skipping due to vibration and whatnot, and these discs having protective cases over them in order to prevent damage is a genius idea! We'll start producing discs immediately!
Sony: Yeah. Now let's talk about royalties for every disc and player sold.
Industry: So the CD is a great format that never skips and never gets damaged!
Consumers with Minidisc: Grumble, grumble, grumble.

3. DVD
Consumers: We need a new format. Laserdisc is too goddamn big, and people don't like it. VHS is very long in the tooth and digital video seems like it's the way to go.
Industry: How about this DVD format? It's pretty cool. Offers all the features of Laserdisc in a much smaller package.
Sony: Great! Now let's talk about royalties for every disc and player sold.
Industry: Oh fuck you! It's an open format! You chose to get in on it.
Sony: Grumble, grumble, grumble.
Consumers: New format! Wide support! Yay!!
DVD Producers: See what happens when we all cooperate?
Fox/Disney/Paramount: We've got this new format called Divx that you have to rent the discs from us for each play...
Consumers: Oh fuck you guys.
Fox/Disney/Paramount: Yeah. Bad idea. Our bad.

4. SACD
DVD-Consortium: Hey! We've got this new format for music called DVD-Audio! It offers insanely high resolution sound and 5.1 channel output! It will be a great musical compliment to all the installed 5.1 channel sound systems that are out there now. And the installed base will only get higher!
RIAA: Sounds good! We like the fact that it's a lot harder to copy than CD's as well!
Sony: We've got a better format! It's called SACD. It offers "higher" quality sound than DVD-Audio and it has a more recognizable name: SUPER audio cd! The super means better!
RIAA: Yeah! Screw DVD and their audio! People associate DVD with VIDEO! Fuck that noise!
Sony: Yeah. Now let's talk about royalties for every disc and player sold.
RIAA: So how about that DVD-Audio? I've heard that it can even carry a video signal?
Consumers: Huh? DVD-Audio won't play in DVD players? SACD won't play in DVD audio players? Fuck this. I'm not buying either.
Psimitry: BUY THE PIONEER COMBO PLAYER! IT PLAYS BOTH AND THE FORMATS ARE BOTH INCREDIBLE!! HELLO?!?!?

5. PSP movie
Sony: Hey! We've got this new portable game player out there! It has a great high resolution small screen. It could in theory be used as a media player. We're going to allow you guys to release movies on it!
Industry: Sounds good to us! Any time we can sell more movies is a good thing!
Sony: Yeah. Now let's talk about royalties for every disc sold.
Industry: Y'know... we're getting sick of you and your royalties. Fuck you. See if you can sell this thing based on ONLY your own fucking library of titles.
Sony: We will! You'll be sorry!
Industry (after reading sales figures): LOL
Sony: Grumble, grumble, grumble.
Consumers with PSP: Grumble, grumble, grumble.

6. Blu-Ray
Movie Industry: We need a new video format. Nevermind that DVD is still selling insanely well. HDTV's are big time on the rise and we need a HD video format to go alongside them.
NEC: Howabout if we just re-tool the current DVD software to increase compression? That way we can use the exact same discs, exact same production facilities, and the only thing that needs to change is the players?
Industry: Good idea, but we want a new format. Not a new software.
Toshiba: How about this new HD-DVD format? It offers really high resolution, a high capacity disc, and it only needs minor retooling of manufacturing lines?
Sony: Fuck them. Their shit sucks and has always sucked. We have this Blu-Ray disc. It uses a blue laser in order to read much higher densities of data and can fit a ton more data on the disc. Like Betamax before it, it offers much higher video and sound quality than that lame-ass HD-DVD stuff. And we're making the PS3 a Blu-Ray player so you'll already have a huge installed user base. 'Cause if the Ps1 and Ps2 are any indication, the PS3 is going to sell like MAD! (as long as people don't pay attention to the cash register when they're buying it)
Industry: Seriously. Fuck them. They should have designed format with higher capacity in the first place. And we love the name! People LOVE the color blue!
Sony: Yeah. Now let's talk royalties for every disc and player sold. In addition, let's talk complete retooling of manufacturing lines that we will also collect royalties from.
Industry: GODDAMMIT SONY! FUCK YOUR ROYALTIES! WILL YOU NEVER LEARN?! YOU HAVE ALWA-
Sony: Our format is much harder to copy than HD-DVD
3/4 of Industry: So let's talk royalties for every disc and player sold.
Consumers: but what about us? These DRM bits of blu-ray are a pain in the ass!
3/4 of Industry: Fuck you guys.

Prediction:
Consumers with Blu-Ray: Well... our format won. But this format still kinda sucks. Grumble, grumble, grumble.
Consumers with HD-DVD: those Blu-Ray buying ******s should have listened to us! Oh well. Let's go play our Wii!

Gabriel apparently tried to eat his share of his own penis..but could not because it was too..."chewy". Dresden then sautéed the penis in a pan with salt, pepper, and garlic.

I hope everyone remembers that one half of the thanks we should be giving out for having compact discs goes to Sony...

LOL at format wars post! tho, I doubt that HD-DVD/BLURAY will take off, simply because there's no ripping crack ATM. You can't rent bluray/HD-DVD yet from netflix (let alone rip it to your HD).

Fukkk that! Oh, and about DVD-A: my car came with DVD-A capable player. Great concept.. just one problem... NO FRIGGIN TITLES ARE AVAILABLE FOR IT!!!! There must be under 50 DVD-A titles ONLY!!! Half of them are YANNI. the rest is some crappy hippy music! I wish Acura gave me damn MP3 capability instead of useless DVD-A that is on its way out the door anyway! bummer.
