Honkey? Cracker? I mean seriously. Racist names for us whities are seriously lacking. One time I had a black call me that beacuse I bumped into him at a club and he said "what da fuck you cracka! fuckin honkey shit!" I seriously just laughed in his face. |
words are just words you are right. But if a black guy called me a cracker like how you described and i called him a n*igger back to his face id be the bad guy. Why is that?
Sorry but the insults would be no less severe. Words are as strong as the beliefs and setiments behind them. If that guy clearly hated you because you were white then his cracker comments would be ever much as bad as a racist white person saying n*gger.
Why do so many double standards apply to this topic? Its disgusting. Why cant people accept that yes there ARE racist black people as well? And that in our society, black people get away with it a lot more often?

Of course there are. Malcolm X was one, Spike Lee borders on one too. The Black Panthers were a totally racist organisation as well but that's swept under the carpet. The guy in the club a few years ago was another one too.
I choose not to be offended by racist comments like that but they ARE still racist. I had a black friend growing up and I asked him to explain why he could call himself (or me interestingly) a "nigga" in jest but he'd be SO offended if we called him that back. He didn't really have an answer. |
because there isnt one without sounding like a hypocrite. Thats my point.
I think the days of abominal political correctness are coming to an end though and hopefully that means we can start to accomplish true equality.

interestingly these people and organizations are still highly regarded as outspoken black heros as racist as they were/are.

I've only known of Richards as a professional, having seen him in various works, and I can only judge him on being a proffesional.
I used to have great respect for him, but now, that is completly out the window. Getting heckled is fine and dandy, because its part of their job to put up with it. Can't take it, dont be in the stand up world.
Want to get back at the heckler? Talk about how they are dressed, how stupid their comments were, but do not imply that he should be hung because of his race. I've seen plenty of comdians get back at hecklers, and none of them have ever handled it so poorly.

to an extent you have a point. a very good point. but i think you are forgetting the historical context of it all.
yes, i agree that the nword should be not used by any race, and that there is a double standard, but you also have to realize that this didn't start out on an equal footing, and the the nword carries a LOT more meaning due to its history then the word cracka does to a caucasian person. and getting rid of that will take time, and too ignore this difference is to say it never existed. i don't mean its right, or that we should keep it this way. but there is a difference, and people do need to be sensitive (yes jay, i know..its a bad word) to it
so this is a semi-argument..not a full one. jay, we're making progress!

I agree 100%. the truth is, there still is a lot of segregation and racism towards many minorities, and the words used to insult them have a long history of intense hate and dehumanization. the "n word" carries a lot more weight than cracker. that doesn't mean i think it is right for anyone to make racial slurs about any race or ethnicity, but the way richards used his comments was way out of line.
also, there have been white comics to use the n word. will ferrell has used it in his comic routines, and it has definitely not sparked this type of controversy. and he right now is a hell of a lot more famous than richards. not only that, but his use of the n word is documented on dvd (his SNL dvd), and this is just on a shitty cell phone video. clearly it was context and the way he used his words, not just what he said.
