This is as much a memory test as a tone-deafness test. Half the time, I had forgotten what the first phrase sounded like before the second phrase played. They may have been going for a first impressions kind of deal, but they could have timed things better.

that is actually one of the factors involved in "tone defness", the ability to remember tones/sounds and how they actually sounded. I had no problems at all remembering...

To an extent, yes, but there's more to remembering a sound than just having it in one's mind. An ability too keep it in ones mind is more than just the auditory faculty. Remembering a tonal relationship for as long as they'd have me wait is not a test of tone-deafness, it's a test of how long I wait before my mind begins to decide it wants to do something else.
