This was a great selection! I loved it. Yeah the mixing is rough, but what the fuck else were you supposed to do. The order made sense, and the tracks were good, and often times didnt even need to be mixed, since they just flowed. The whole set reminded me very much of the big bear hug I got when we met briefly. Warm, open armed music that is inviting and rich. |
Cheers, I spent a fair amount of time not getting the tunes together as I had most of them floating in my head, but figuring out how to match them and create a flow without mixing them in an house/trance etc edm formt, but a radio style format - a format I find perfectly pleasant to listen to a lot of music to - especially when there's is a DJ who takes time with his track selection.
I was definetely exposing a more soulful chillin side of my operation, just comfortable calm music. Been a bit of a weird month with my grandmother passing and I've really found myself listening to this sort of stuff very often.

Reviewing this mix in any kind of "traditional" sense would be ridiculous and not do justice to the work you did here Greg. Mixing schmixing I say, it's all about the programming when it comes to sets like this.
I'm a bit cashed right now (written 20 pages of philosophy in the last 2 days), so pardon me if I'm unable to articulate this review all that well, but rest assured that this mix kept me in good spirits during a time when I couldn't deal with standard issue EDM and just needed something new to chill out to.
I listened to this earlier today following Montana's "Four Phases" (not the new "More phases") dub set and Clovis' mushroom set, and this definitely kept the kind of mellow vibe rolling along. The beginning of the set worked well, but I kind of felt like it took a while to get going, it just kind of rolled along for the first 30 minutes or so. But by the end of the set when that Lemongrass tune kicks in I'm hooked, and when "Last Train" kicks in I was reminded of all the reasons I love that tune.
Well done Greg - Something once again different from you, which I guess I've come to expect as the norm, but you tackle it well! |
In many ways it was extremely difficult deciding how to progress this set due to the tempo and style of a lot of this music, it's very calm and relaxed, but there are definetely those subtle vibe and energy difference, it's just different and requires somewhat of a different approach.
I wanted to kind of lull the listener into the relaxed state with the first half and kind of get into their head a little big on the second with some really what I would refer to as introspective music or contemplation music. However I feel the journey is a major aspect of getting to the place where the listener is able to feel that vibe - in any case it worked for me - I suppose I'm my own test subject.
Thanks a lot for the listen, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I have been exploring many different genres, not necessarily looking for anything, just getting a taste for what's out there. I think the insight gained from putting mixes like this together along with more traditional "dance" mixes is invaluable.
Cheers!

Well I have given it one listen so far, and to be honest, I just was not able to get into it... Maybe it was my state of mind at the time.. I had just finished playing Battlefield 2142 and was pretty pissed of with some players, so needed some dark psy to let loose my aggression... I will give this another try when I am in a more mellow state of mind..

well greg, this is a good mix. the track selection is fucking spot on, great mix of mature pop music, quirky electronic music, downtempo beats & guitar poprock. I know how it is to arrange a mix like this and you fucking nailed it in terms of that, it sounded exactly how I'd like every want (normal) radio to sound when i tune into it. The general feel is not that much mellow but it has touches of it.
But here comes the thing that irritated me heavily at times. some of the transitions are WAY TO BLUNT, especially out of the Skye, that transition need a solid second before you brought in Nach Scratch. There was two or three other mixes also that was almost as blunt as that one but it wasn't that much of a biggie. Since you arranged this mix, there is no excuse to get into the milliseconds to do timing in term of arrangements, because that, my friend is what could make this one a stellar set.
But like i said, i still think this is a great mix, and this will have a permanent home on mi mp3player for a while
