You can't just cut preseason games, they are necessary for the teams. That being said, WHY NOT EXTEND THE SEASON?! NCAA footballers are in season for 5 months (maximum, including preseason training), while basketball is in for 6-7 and hockey 7. SO as far as making their season a few weeks longer, I think they can handle it. Now, from today until their bowl games, a month from now, the top 8 don't play any games. That is a little backwards. But, seeing as how X-Mass and the surrounding days may not be great for TV ratings, I say they start the play-off on Saturday, Dec. 30.
So you take the top eight teams and compose a play-off that'd look something similar to this:
A. #1 OSU vs. #8 USC
B. #2 Florida vs. #7 Oklahoma
C. #3 Michigan vs. #6 Wisconson
D. #4 LSU vs. #5 Louisville
E. Winner of A vs. Winner of D
F. Winner of B vs. Winner of C
G. Winner of E vs. Winner of F
Games would start Saturday, December 30th. Now I know TV ratings are a huge part of this debate, so it is only feasible to really have two of those games on that Saturday (day and night). So, the other two would be played on Sunday. Yes, NFL sunday. Fuck 'em, the college games will drain away the NFL viewers. The semi-finals will be played the next week on Saturday the 6th and then the finals will be played monday the 15th(for ratings and giving the players a few extra days). Half of the teams will have played no more games than they would have previously (and in fact their season would end earlier) and only two would play 2 more games than they would have in the current system. The last game would be played exactly 1 week after the current scheduled one.
I don't see how the TV ratings would be any worse than they are for the current big four bowl games (Sugar, Rose, Orange, Cotton?). In fact, with more "big" games, the NCAA would probably rake in more dough. The schools would be all for it because now they would be sharing in revenue from possibly 3 big games rather than 1 if their team is to make the finals. All the controversy between where the top teams are landing in the rankings would be lowered a great deal. Nearly every sports commentator/talk show host is for the play-off, all that stands in the way is the NCAA, always looking out for itself first and then the athletes.
