Yea, thanks Petran, now I see a bit of how you percieve genres. If people took some time out to check this out they might realise that a thread like this could open up people's perception of genres and show them what they have in common!

Yea this thread is not bad at all. I don't know why you got negative responses. Most of the threads in music discussion right now are musch worse in comparison to this one. It's true though, people in here get very preachy about genres and they were massive flame-wars in the past about the current subject-matter. Sad, cause in the end, genres, like many complex categories are very ill-defined and subjective.

Ugggh, another thread whose only intent is to pigeonhole artists into meaningless genres?

Congrats - This thread is slightly more ridiculous than this one.

Considering he is responisble for most of them, it seems pretty obvious...

2) Disco: Bee-Gees, Gloria Gaynor, Donna Summer, Georgio Moroder, Scissor Sisters, Daft Punk, Cassius.

3) Electro: Kraftwerk, Ectomorph, MANDY, Tiga

9) Breaks: Meat Katie, Elite Force, Dylan Coombs, Plump DJ's, Finger Lickin' Records

10) Progressive House: John Digweed, Sasha, Trick and Kubic, 16 bit Lolitas,

You know why I posted this:

I try to pay as little attention to genre classifications as possible...

Because when I read your post and saw each artist/label listed under a different genre, I immediatly started to think of Daft Punk that ISNT disco, Kerri Chandler that isn't deep house, Meat Katie that isn't breaks and Sasha sets that go from minimal to tech house to techno to prog in the space of 2 hours.

Not to mention that minimal is not in your list of genres, as you seem to have lumped it in with techno.

Do not pay attention to genres.

Well, Clovis, guys, from what i've understood this guy is not interested in discovering the absolute genre classifications. He is interested in just seeing what people's perceptions of genres are. I view it more like a research concept rather then a flaming discussion on what fits a specific genre. In a matter of fact i would have found it interesting to see how people categorise and stuff. It could lead to common themes and various ideas such as when the concept of "genre" breaks-down.(for example like Sasha). It would be really interesting, but unfortunately it seems that the MD probably doesn't have the maturity for this thread.

Well I would have been happy to engage in more in-depth discussion if the thread wasn't marred from the beggining by slaging and name calling bullshit.

How can I answer what my perceptions of a genre are if I dont really have any perceptions to begin with? I try to keep those perceptions to a minimum since, like I pointed out above, they lead to too much categorization and pigeonholing of artists. G

Clovis, get real, the only time I responded negatively was when people couldn't be bothered to even try and engage the thread, or not read it and say things they think are cool, like "I don't like to pigeonhole things" or some or other rubbish. This thread was an attempt to see how people perceived different artists in genre. It's not about right or wrong, bad or good, just purely how you see the bigger picture for each artist.

If people can't be big enough to realise this or take a bit of time to show how they would organise the various categories, then don't bother posting other stupid things. It's a simple question of asking you for examples on what you think of genres and how different artists fit into them in the bigger picture.

To be honest Xtatica, nobody asked for your opinion or discussion on his opinion, merely for your own examples or opinions, thanks.
