There's been so much good music this year, I don't even know where to start. I can't even listen to it all. The last time I could say that must have been 2001. And it just keeps pouring in.

Here's how I see it: In 2006, the walls between techno, progressive, and house were torn down. Trance was even revived from German roots, and tossed into the blender. The sound of this year was both minimal and lyrical, simple yet deep. Take Âme or Gabriel Ananda. It was both honest and accessible, glitchy yet groovy. Think Booka Shade or Trentemøller. Open floodgates have turned the scene into one glorious, indistinguishable mess, where old genre rules no longer apply. We've lowered ourselves to labels with two hyphens, or just shrugging in favor of "good shit". What's a genre whore like me to do? Listen, I guess.

Many people predicted that 2006 would be a year of change in dance music, and they were right. Things were already moving in the summer of 2005, but I didn't expect it to unfold as brilliantly has it has. For once, I don't have a clue what things will look like a year from now.

What's your take on the year?

Beautiful post.. and i think anyone who embraced the change with a shred of credibility will agree with you.

2006 - definitely the walls came down a touch... for every DJ/artist that is making music with more varibility than 2004/5 though, i feel there is a sort of opposite movement, to guys (TYAS) who are just shovelling us shit, boring, uninspired crap, churning out the same production over and over.

Hopefully in 2007, these guys will lost the hype they have been unfairly given this year, just for having a regular output.

Didn't really keep up with things this year, been far too busy with other, personal, stuff. Didn't catch that many parties either, apart from the obvious summer festivals (and seeing Vath and Galuzzi this Friday).

Really intend to do better next year because I'm too young for rock..

Genre-wise, it's been a toss up between techno and progressive, and it'll probably end up like that next year as well.

So like I said depending on if your an NCM or Officer and your rank, you probably make at least $50,000 a year but most likely more. And depending on if you live at CFB Kingston your cost of living is probably very low as well, but even if you weren't cost of living in Kingston isn't that bad. Its only $30 which is cheaper than most nights at Stereo. Most of us on here who post about Stereo have put out probably hundreds and hundreds of dollars clubbing there just this year alone, and have never really complained for the most part. I know I sure as hell have.

Something that has occured to me is that most of what I liked and explored this year, young and old, seemed completely at odds with what was actually enjoying prosperity. Prog psy? Didn't grab me. Dubstep? Wasn't interested. The techno revolution? Meh. And so on.

I don't think I really connected with any of the trends or blossoms this year. There was nothing I felt I could follow and reap consistent results from. I found plenty of good stuff, new and old, but if I look at the records I enjoyed this year, none of them seem remotely connected.

2006 = awesome

Deejayed every other weekend at local clubs and house parties

bought a ton of new equipment and music

started producing seriously

took a classes on signal processing, additive and fm synthesis and studio recording at my university in addition to what i'm doing in architecture.

tackled ableton, now using with a mixer (soon a djm800) korg kontrol49 and wacom tablet as midi controllers live

started mixing video at parties using resolume at the same time as ableton or vinyl

doubled the size of the group i organized in my area, the electronic music collective, which organizes parties and unites the scene locally.

style has become what i can only describe as dark, deep, somewhat melodic, tribal, tech, slightly chilled.

made it out to see Carl Cox, Pvd, Sander K, John Digweed, Hernan Cattaneo, Darude, Dallas Superstars, Benny Benassi, DJ Hype, Paul Oakenfold twice, Armin twice, Ferry Corsten, Lee Burridge, Josh Gabriel, et al.

spent the summer in brazil

GOOD trance this year was hard to find... Actually "best of the year" quality tracks in any genre have been minimal this year... 2006 hasn't really been a great year IMO, quite boring actually, but with some highlights.

Grew tired of ASOT for real this year Been listening to music from all over the place genre wise (not so much trance though) and it really has kept me satisfied. Also discovered the DJ Promotion section and that has really opened my eyes for new stuff. Can't wait to see what 2007 will bring us.

Search for Digital Mystikz, Vex'd, Loefah and Skream on Juno. I'd suggest getting high quality mp3s and to play them on proper speakers + subwoofer, or else it won't be as enjoyable.

2006 it all went back to basics.

spent the first half of the year quite depressed about the state of trance. took a couple months off and listened to random shit.

some of the minimal basically is oldskool trance (and its farken wikkid) but for me right now, i am totally pwned by some of the prog psy stuff going around.

as this year ends i have come to the realisation that i have to give up playing kiddie trance just for gigs.

also began production, got to support some big names and play at some of melbs best events.

got smashed a little too often

kool year.

next one will be even better

I'll have to agree with Allied Nations, there is plenty of incredible artists on these forums from both production and djing - I've downloaded many mixes and most of them are outstanding. I hope that 2007 brings the same if not more mixes that we've seen this year.

As for next year I hope to make more quality mixes that people enjoy listening to, and to also get stuck into the production side of Trance.
