Evan G
WHO: Toronto DJ Evan G is usually found orchestrating many of the city’s house and techno parties. The co-founder of Activate promotes events mostly in nightclubs like Footwork (and the now defunct Roxy Blu and Element) where he’s on the bill packed with local DJs and headliners like Donald Glaude, Miss Kittin and Joey Baltram in a mash up night of breaks, house, techno and electro. Evan threw his first event in 2000 when raves were no longer satisfying his tastes. After losing his shirt on an overzealous first attempt, Evan learned some lessons and launched Activate in 2001 with his friend Cyrus Songad. Over the last five years, he’s collaborated with several promoters on events featuring the likes of Deep Dish, John Digweed, James Lavelle and Carl Cox. Most recently he teamed up with Make It Funky on Afrika Bambaataa’s Toronto appearance in October as part of a mini tour that Evan organized. Currently, Evan is reminiscing about back in the day by throwing an “Old School Boxing Day Blowout” party at Footwork with fellow DJ Robb G. The night will feature rave anthems and classics from 1992-98 by DJs Jelo, Kenny Glasgow, Tim Patrick, Stretch & Hooker, Robb G, MC Flipside and legendary rave-era DJ John E, coaxed out of retirement.
WHAT: “My music policy is just good music first, regardless of how you would classify it,” says Evan G. “I think the key to a good event is the people. Doesn’t matter how great the music is, if the people suck, the party will suck. Positive, open-minded people only please.”
WHERE: Old School Boxing Day Blowout Dec. 26 at Footwork (425 Adelaide St. W.)
FAVOURITE EVENT OF ALL TIME: Jelo vs. Deko-ze on six decks in 2002, the Beats Ahoy boat cruises, the Activate 4-Year Anniversary at System Soundbar, the 5-Year at Footwork, and the old Activate Wednesdays at Element.
FABOURITE EVENT YOU PROMOTED IN 2006: That’s a toss up between Afrika Bambaataa at El Mocambo (Oct. 28) and the Activate 5-Year Anniversary at Footwork (Sept. 23). Both were rammed and just had a crazy energy on the room.
