Get a sig. other who will dump you if you don't quit, but is willing to go down on you every time you resist a craving.

It's the only thing that works.

Funny I just found this thread now.

By 7:00AM CST (roughly) this morning, I'll be on hour 96 of being Nicotine/Cigarette Free. I started smoking when I was about 12 years old (young I know), I quickly shot up to smoking about 10 Cigarettes a day which was very difficult for me to do as I was highly addicted but was too young to afford or buy my own. Stealing Cigarettes from my Dad was the only was to really get my 'fix'.

As of Friday morning I was upto about a pack a day. The funny thing about this right now, is I did not go to bed Thursday evening thinking I would be quitting this clinching habit the following morning.

It was as simple as me just not buying another pack as I ran out on the previous one. I just said to myself 'fuck it'. I puffed that last cigarette down only about half way and flicked it out the car window as I normally would driving to work that morning.

I'm not going to lie and say this has been a cake walk for me, but in all honesty it hasn't been nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. The cravings are intense, but only last a couple minutes at a time, if you just stay mentally strong and occupy your time the cravings will subside and you'll get through it just fine.

Running has helped greatly for me as well. The cravings completely subside for me while I'm running, and I also know I'm helping my cardiovascular and lung health along side supressing my cravings so it's a double win situation to run. I also found out how out of shape I really was.

Just a couple tips for those who are thinking about breaking the habit and want to be free of the nicotine beast:

Don't romanticize your last Cigarette! You're setting yourself up for failure right then and there if you treat your last cigarette any differently than any other. I decided on a complete whim to stop smoking right then and there, doing that has greatly helped me drop the habit.

Get rid of all the packs of cigarettes you still have. Keeping them around is just going to make it that much harder for you. Now, if you think you're going to cave under the pressure, you'll have to make a concious decision to drive upto the store and purchase a pack before you can 'feed the need'. With cravings only lasting about 3-5 minutes at a time, the craving will most likely have subsided by the time you reach the store.

Sorry for the long winded post, but I hope I can help others who are really thinking about quitting.
