I'm not sure about biology, but it seemed that a historical / ancestral definition of "race" was at issue, since the "problem" was that Obama had no American slaves as ancestors. Yes, but no one in the field would say it is more nurture than nature or the other way around. The current understanding is that your genes predispose you to a certain range of possible development and that your environment determines to what point of the range you actually get to.
