ok well here's a generic situation.
you're dating a girl for 2-5 months, whatever, and you're exclusive, etc. Then you throw out "I Love You."
3-5 months later you break up with a girl, cuz she cheated on you. Do you still love the person? Does she even deserve your love? Or do you go on caring about them in respect for the "special" times that you've shared, but don't love her anymore because (in a way) she lost your love due to her actions... and vice versa.
interesting...well...sometimes you still feel for the person you broke up with because you still love who she once was...

It’s 100% true and I think that is the reason for lots of failed relationships...people not loving themselves before getting involved. You can’t really look for someone to fill in negative gaps of yourself that you are completely capable of filling yourself. I could go into detail with this statement but whatever, it’s self explanatory.
Very true. I hate when people say, "I'm empty inside and I need that special someone to make me whole again " No! You need to fill in your own holes. Someone can " complete your life " but not complete you.

Yup. It's so cliche, and so 100% true. Not to mention that you can't give 100% of yourself to someone else if you don't even know or like what that is.

there's no like... ultimate truth for love. each person feels it in different ways/degrees/scenarios/etc.
edit: one may say they are in love, and you look at it and say they're not. but to them that's what love is, while to you it's not.
Though I do not disagree with what you said here, I would also like to point out that it's very easy to see the signs of infatuation within others. Especially when you are quite familiar with the signs. It's not right to tell people if they're in love or not because that's possibly the most individual choice one can make, but it's much easier to see that somebody else is infatuated with another than it is for them to see it, themselves.
No meaningful feelings have ever come out of a relationship founded on infatuation for me, so I guess I am not really convinced that some "loving relationships" can actually start that way. But maybe the infatuation hindsight is 20/20?

and let's keep it simple here folks and agree that we are all talking about the basic standard of "love" that society has defined, yet doesn't seem to have a clue what it is.

true.
another point - movies and music have a lot to do with this "societal" definition. sappy chick flicks especially ruin it but attempting to show what love is.
