Depending on the lottery, they could (for record keeping/number selection purposes), have taken a photocopy of the numbers chosen before giving you the ticket.

If the numbers come up they'll know - and - can say that their ticket was stolen. If you attempt to cash in that ticket you'll get nailed -- and -- the person with the photocopy has an advantage over you since they know where the ticket was purchased from.
