Final Fantasy has some of THE best music I've ever heard. There are some songs in Final Fantasy IX that basically define my life. Shit's too good!

I still have to check out some of the names mentioned here, but in the meantime I've given Divenire from Ludovico Einaudi a few listens. Very good album if you ask me.. Exactly the kind of classical I seem to like.

I couldn't really get into the Philip Glass stuff though, but it seems like I'm pretty much the only one.

Lately I've been very interested in the works of Gyorgy Ligeti, the guy in my avatar.

Ligeti was born in 1923 and died almost exactly three years ago in 2006. A lot of his work is very "modern" in the sense of departing from traditional sense of tonality and experimenting with instrumentation and form, although he wasn't doctrinaire "atonal" or "serialist" either, which means that his works often aren't quite as dense or difficult to approach as some other modern composers.

If you've seen the Stanley Kubrick films 2001, The Shining, or Eyes Wide Shut, you'll have heard some of his more famous pieces like "Lux Aeterna" (the choral piece from 2001), "Atmospheres," and "Musica Ricerta" (the unsettling piano piece in Eyes Wide Shut). I already had some of his piano music, but yesterday I ordered this box set from Amazon. Five CDs worth of Ligeti at $35, not bad at all.

If you're into music theory or a math type, then Bach is great. I've started to appreciate his music more and more after learning more about theory and you really begin to see genius behind his work.

Do many of you guys like opera? I've never been able to get into it because the style of singing strikes me as annoying and kind of absurd, with all the vibrato and drama. It's a shame, because there's some really beautiful music written for opera. I just can't get past the singing style, though. Like in the prelude to Wagner's Ring Cycle:

For me the music is so beautiful right up until the moment the singers burst in. Who knows, maybe I would change my mind about opera if I were ever to see some of it live or force myself to listen to an entire performance rather than just bits and pieces once in a while.

I'll second Pictures at an Exhibition, which I strangely also played on alto sax in my orchestra. Crank it for the Great Gate of Kiev.

In general I think that stuff from 1880 and on is probably more immediately enjoyable to someone who doesn't know too much about classical music. There were a group of composers called "The Five" (of which Mussorgsky was 20%) who I really enjoy.
