I spoke to a family friend this weekend who is an oncologist. She said there have been no significant findings in the cancer treatment field that have peaked the interest of any hospitals or oncologists/associations recently. She concluded that this development is just like any other, with no special attention due, just like many have pointed out in this thread.
Oh well let's hope for the best...

this wasn't a personal attack against you or your family, so relax. behaviour like yours should lead to suspensions. appalling |
I think it's normal for people to take certain statements very personally based on their own experiences with what's being said. If they feel hurt because someone didn't put enough thought into what they said, that person will get flamed just like everyone else on TA, albeit a very harsh personal flaming. However, the response was equal to how intense their reaction was, which, given the context, is understandable.
Okay I'm back to work...I'll stick to analyzing numbers.

I used to work at Sunnybrook in the cancer centre doing research, and my father is the head of radiation oncology there...so I have a little experience. The progression and approval of a drug for treatment is very long and slow...if they are showing initial progress on individual human cells for a few select cancers, that is great news...but it is a far cry for a "cure for cancer". There has to be years of clinical trials to show that the side effects are not worse than the treatment, and it would have to be approved by the regulating body. According to my dad, the system is going broke now with all the drugs it already have in action, the 2nd and 3rd line drugs which slow cancer for a few weeks but offer no hope of a cure. It can cost up of $10,000 for one treatment of chemotherapy, and one patient could need months of daily treatments with no possible cure as a result.
If it is as cheap to manufacture as the article states, that would be fantastic news. If it really is effective it will be recognized by pharmaceutical companies, someone needs to manufacture it in large doses under rigorous conditions, but maybe it would be more affordable for our healthcare system.

not true, you need to do all the toxicological testing on lower species, then randomized controlled double blind trials, plus an assload of paperwork and waiting for clinical/fda approval and peer review of your studies... most drugs it takes 5-10 years.
as other people have said, there's no point in staying alive too long, unless you'd like to wait until the age when the earth is overcrowded to the point where people are killing and eating eachother and everything is godawfully polluted. not that i don't have sympathy for people who are dying (my father is dying of brain cancer and my mother in law is dying of ovarian cancer, one of my friends is dying of lung cancer and another cervical cancer), but the reality is, we're all dying, some just quicker than others, and it's probably for the best. people just hate to admit that because they live their lives like there's going to be a million tomorrows, trying their hardest for the best jobs, trying to fuck the hottest people, trying to be famous, trying to buy the best car, trying to rebel against their impermanence, when in reality they need to be thinking of the future of the planet, not themselves.
in another hundred years being able to have children will be a luxury
