now Sportstrance, I also appreciate ur effort, but nicotine is not what i am addicted to, i don't even know myself if i am addicted or not, and dream grl is also rigth when she said that when u want to quit something, u just do it, I 've done it before, but after a year seeing everyone of my friends smoking ,I had to take on a butt again.

for me it has nothing to do with being addicted, it is what i use to calm my stress, is the pleasure of holding that stupid little cigarette,it is so stupid. All I need to find is something else to calm my stress and I will be ok.

Thanks again for those being supportive
Alex

Umm....ok? So you are smoking to inhale and exhale to relieve stress? cuz you can do that without smoke. And you're on a board asking how to quit? If you're addicted to the nicotine you'll know it. So obviously you're not. And you see all your friends smoking and you feel you have to smoke? WTF is this shit........If you wanna relieve stress, go jack off, exercise, beat up a punching bag, there are thousand things........If you were actually addicted, u don't exactly "just quit"......Obviously you've never been addicted before and never really quit before cuz you never really started, cuz you'd KNOW if you're addicted to the nicotine or not.......no questions asked.......man what a wastes of my posts.......

Look at your first post, you're asking about patches......now look at your last post, "now Sportstrance, I also appreciate ur effort, but nicotine is not what i am addicted to".........

how old are you dude?

OK... first off I have to say something to all the ASSHOLES here who are like "you're a moron for starting," you're not helping anybody and you just look like some immature little punk.

But about quitting. I got a carton and smoked myself rediculous. By the time I finished it, I could hardly stand to smoke another cigarette. I did have relapses after that, but they weren't nearly as bad. Just when I was drinking.

Something that really helps you is replacing your habits. Like I used to constantly smoke when I was driving, but now that I'm back at school for the long haul, I don't drive. Not a big problem there hehe. But the habits are whats gonna cause you to relapse. Best find a way to fight them.

first of all, i was kidding. and I don't understand what you mean by the "think like a smoker" part. if he was addicted in the past, and has quit, and sees all this talk about cigs then he might start joanzin for one. I know even after I had quit for a few months, the mere mention of smoke gave me a hard-on for one.

i'm on the patch now for 5 days

i smoked for almost 10 years, and i thought if i didn't quit now, i would never be able to quit in the future. it seems to work alright, i'm not as irritable as i was in past attempts. if you think you could refrain from drinking alcohol for a few months, you might want to try Zyban. i know 4 people that tried it, and 3 of them quit. pretty good odds .

but you have to be sure that you want to quit, and that you're ready to quit. every time you "quit" and start again, it will only make it harder to really quit.

anyway, GOOD LUCK!

your post wasn't wasted. in fact i think it was one of the best posts from this thread.... this thread went from a simple question to a great discussion.

your point Dino about its not just the nicotine, but needing to have something in your hand or in your mouth nailed it on the head for me.... When i get sick, i won't smoke for 2 to 3 weeks.... if my friends aren't over i won't smoke... just hanging out in front of the house chattin' for hours , thats when we smoke. It just comes down to having something to do with your mouth and hands i guess...

it also makes it hard to quit when all your friends smoke (and are NOT trying to quit), or if you go to clubs and/or bars....

so i'm working on it and have to quit next week b/c i'm going away for the military. this should be fun.

Cheers
-ABT-

bout what everyone is saying - i sorta know whats up but not really. for a nonsmoker i really smoke the shit outta myself occasionally. yeah im usually that guy bumming cigs from others, but i never buy packs, so i think that helps me from going all out. plus they smell like crap if im not drunk so i cant notice em.

i read at some point this year that medical studies have shown that the act of lighting up is possibly just as addictive as the nicotine. on the same topic tho, nicotine is almost as addictive as heroin, so that makes me glad im not a 'true' smoker.

it will be difficult to stop, hell my aunt and cousin still smoke even tho grandma got cancer last year...it sucks. you think about it tho, if you are early in especially, you CAN quit - its not like its necessary for life.(obviously)

i generally just stick to the non addictive hoon for all my smoking needs. its a bigger pain in the ass sometimes, but id rather shell out 40 bucks every 2 weeks for dope if i need it than 40 a week for nico. good luck to anyone trying to stop - i KNOW it wouldnt be easy...peas/

Damo: no probs, I didn't catch the irony in your post

The "think like a smoker" thing is simple. The thing to remember is there is more to smoking than simple nicotine addiction. If you're a smoker (remember I was a heavy smoker) you see the world in a different way. For example, just look at all the smokers here saying how they miss their cigarettes when they are stressed, or when they are relaxed with friends. So what does nicotine do that helps both STRESS and RELAXATION??? -- they are complete opposites so do you see the problem?. The answer is simple:

Nicotine does bugger all for stress or relaxation or anything else. Nicotine just gets in your system and all it does is tell you to put more nicotine in. Non-smokers get just as stressed, and they relax just as deeply as smokers (that makes sense right?) but they do it without nicotine. They don't even THINK about nicotine. That's why the secret to stopping is getting to that mind-set. Stopping nicotine is just not enough because then although you won't be putting the drug in your system you will still be thinking like a smoker. You need the frame of mind too; it's the same one you had before you became addicted.

Am I the only person here who used to be an addicted, heavy smoker but who has successfully managed to stop?

i know what you mean. i smoke occasionally and usually feel like sdhit the next day, bad headaches, worse hangover - but i never get the idea to smoke cigarettes. i guess thats lucky OR stupid depending how you look at it, but-

yeah i have seen smokers say that it helps 'stress'. the only thing i feel if im sober and have alot of nicotine is overwhelmed and sick - only when ive been smoking and stop do i feel the stress. dunno got a headache now and stress, but its homework related/

Thumbs up ZYBAN

I just read through that ZYBAN site, and I found some pretty interesting stuff... I've been trying to quit smoking for a month now, but I've only managed to cut down a lot, but I am still determined to do so. Lemme tell you one thing, I've been smoking for over 6 years now, and the idea of thinking like a non-smoker struck me as being the best. Yes you will get cravings, you will smash your head on the walls and start biting your fingernails, but as soon as you clear your mind, (i.e. not think about that cancer stick) that craving just dissapeares like it did for me before I started writing this post...

And one more thing, I've read many times some of the people here "quit" smoking TWICE and all that, how can you quit something twice?!? that means you never did quit the first time around!! If your gonna quit do it once.
