I agree.

What annoys me is when others push their religion on others. You can educate them about your religion...but allow each other to form their own opinions. People not believing in your God is not going to effect whether you believe or not.

agnostic/borderline atheist?

i don't know. lately i just hate applying myself to predetermined labels. why do i have to apply myself to one of a few existing sets of beliefs, or align myself on the dichotomy of god existing or not? these are all things that i only care about because so many other people do. i think i'm smart enough to develop my own moral compass. i'll have to see some kind of sign myself to believe in anything supernatural, tradition and other people attesting their faith will not cut it for me.

the marxist belief that man created god blah blah seems pretty cynical at first, but it makes a lot of sense if you actually read his works. it's just the way we reason - if you're hungry, you will think of a solution; a way to get food. if you want to be rich, many avenues exist to getting there. however, there are some universal goals that can't be answered, such as wondering where the fuck you go when you die. nothing we can reason or prove can explain these things, so supernatural concepts have to fill in so we can get sleep at night. and as we can see religion also helps answer other injustices like not being able to achieve those goals of food or money. this is how the concept of god came forth universally in every society in my opinion, it wasn't because god stretched his powers across the globe and showed proof of his existence in different ways or something.

however, asking whether religion can function as a set of values or a tool to bring a community together is a completely different topic. while i think that it can be good, looking at all the problems with organized religion (especially the catholic church in the last 1000 years, even without the da vinci code BS it's pretty ridiculous), and all the religious wars going on, i have to say we'd probably be better off leaving this monotheistic stuff behind us.

Hmm.. I'm somewhere in between agnostic and atheist. I don't believe in God in the usual way - Bible, Quaran, and everything else related is bullshit - God doesn't talk to people, nor did it ever have a part-man part-God likeness walking the earth, it doesn't do miracles because you pray for them, it doesn't even care if you pray to it, and it most certainly doesn't judge you. All that crap was just made up by people with big imaginations to make the simple people back then to adhere to a common set of basic moral rules. Maybe so that people would agree on stuff they don't necessarily understand and not fight over it. Of course, it'd be great if it was just ONE set of beliefs and moral rules, but people had to make their own religions with their own stories and lessons, which created differences, which created rifts, which created wars, and there went the basic idea of making the set of beliefs to keep people happy and at peace.

Don't even get me started on organized religion - put in a nice way, organized religion is a disease upon humanity. It hinders free thought and free speech, it uses the many for personal gains of the few, it manipulates people, and it is the biggest cause of pain, suffering, and loss of human lives that we will ever know.

What I do believe is that God is more like a governing force of the universe rather than some supernatural being as He is described in your bible. What I said in the other thread kind of describes it:
quote:

My belief is this - I think some things/situations/events do happen for a reason - all those things we brush off as merely an unlikely coincidence really aren't, and that there is a force that governs these situations/"coincidences". That said, I believe humans do have complete free will. Whatever force that governs a car crashing, and flipping over, sliding across the intersection to stop an inch in front of you has no control over how you react to what happened. I dunno if i'm making myself clear, but basically, this force has no control over us, it only has control over our environment. So we do make our own path, but this path is determined partly by the events that happen to us, and partly by how we react to the events that happen to us (and how we react is totally up to us).

This force is everywhere, at all times, but it is not a petty being like Santa that cares if you've been bad or good, and watches over you at all times.

BTW, those waiting or searching for proof of God, you might as well give up now - it will never happen. I think if we were ever to prove God exists, that would destroy the existence of God. Like, since God is a supernatural being, and if we prove it using our natural earthly ways, then you're essentially bridging the gap between the supernatural and the natural. So you'll be bringing God down to our level. And if you do that, it's no longer God. I hope this makes sense. I don't know if proof of non-existence of God is possible or not.
