Power to misspelling and down with stigmatisation!
Spelling in English is extremely problematic: the spelling was crystallised about five centuries ago, often following many misconceptions made by grammarians during the Renaissance. "Island", for example, wasn't supposed to be spelled with an "s", yet they wanted to make it similar to Latin "Isla". This added several "silent letters" to English writing, which is confusing.
Also, the pronunciation of vowels changed abnormally much in the last centuries. If you speak another European language - let's say, Spanish or German - you'd expect "rite" to be pronounced like "reet". However, vowels engaged in a confusing dance and because of the variety of dialects in English, the changes were often full of exceptions (reason why "enough", "though" and "through" don't rhyme).
Finally, we've reached an age where literacy is a lot more common than in previous centuries. If you speak English, all you have in common with other English speakers is the language you speak (contrasting with how you speak that language). Speaking comes naturally, as any baby starts babbling without being told to. Writing, however... is exclusively a somewhat recent man-made product. You can't expect everyone to excel in something that not only is a recent development in the history of mankind, but is also full of logical inconsistencies.
Edit: Not to mention that Webster decided it was a good idea to change the way words were spelled in the United States, creating some kind of "Written Accent"
