Since the early days of the US rave scene, to the more sophisticated clubbing of the new millennium, Noel Sanger has stood among his peers as one of North America’s finest electronic exports. His massive discography spans a decade and has surpassed 150 released productions appearing on 30 plus record labels in more than a dozen countries, with consistent support from pa diverse array of practically any A-list DJ you can name. Having escaped household and brand-name status, Noel might be the best kept secret in dance music, although his substantial contributions to global dance culture have been acknowledged repeatedly by the industry’s elite.
One such acknowledgment came at the start of 2006, when no less than electronic music's foremost virtuoso, BT, personally hired Noel as a programmer on his collaborations with Dutch Superstar, Tiesto, now released on Tiesto's “Element's of Life” CD. Noel spent a month in Los Angeles, working side by-side with the two producers in BT's studio, contributing significantly to the outcome of the project.
His five nationally (US) released DJ mixes have all met with enthusiastic critical acclaim; the most recent of those, Summerbreeze 2, is widely regarded as one of the best mix comps of 2002/2003. He has remixed tracks from artists such as Lustral, Flash Brothers, Delerium, DJ Hyper, BT, PQM, Jan Johnston, and dozens of others, and over the years his works have appeared on top dance labels like Armada, Baroque, Curvve, Electrofly, Perfecto, Solaris, Release, Institution, Nettwerk, Acetate Ltd., Musicnow, Limbo, Additive and Sunkissed as well as majors like Sony UK, Universal US, and more. His original releases have always met with similar critical acclaim, leaving many an empty space on record shop walls around the world.
From Santo Domingo to Vancouver, Guadalajara to Ottawa, he has criss-crossed the continent time and again, bringing his unique style of forward-thinking dance music to some of the world’s best clubs, and to the world’s best crowds. From 2001 to 2003 he toured with DJ Tiesto several times, most recently accompanying the superstar DJ on the Sony Playstation 2 Dual Play Tour through 14 American cities. The world seems to have taken note-Noel’s first global touring began Summer 2003 in Japan, and spread to South America that Fall. He's maintained a rigorous schedule of releases, tour dates and studio work ever since, even teaching production techniques for two years part time at the world's foremost recording arts program, Full Sail in Orlando, Florida.
His modest musical beginnings laid the groundwork for the steady consistency which has characterized his career. At age eight he wrote his first full songs; at age 13 he picked up his first guitar; in high school he studied music theory, along with jazz and classical music. He played in various metal and punk bands throughout these years until, in 1990, he was converted to the electronic religion of house and techno while working as a radio presenter at a Naples, FL dance music radio station. From there he began to DJ and produce music, building a small but devoted following for the underground in the tourist town which he called home. By late 1994 he felt it was time to move on, and set up shop in nearby Miami. Immediately he began doing guest spots in South Florida's best venues, and in less than two years had played often at such notable
spaces as The Edge, Groove Jet, Warsaw, Bash, Amnesia, as well as innumerable one-offs and raves. By day he worked for the well known house label E-sa records, playing a crucial role in launching their successful OX imprint. When, in mid1996, studio demands became too heavy to continue with the label, he devoted himself to producing, DJ'ing, and songwriting full time.
In 1997 he teamed up with vocalist Nicole Henry, who had been featured on a number of his internationally licensed productions, to create a live PA which many feel helped raise the bar for live electronic music in the American rave scene. The electrifying performances, which featured Noel’s emotive guitar, live keyboards and percussion paired with Nicole’s soulful vocals, took them throughout the US for over two years and nearly 80 shows. It culminated in a headline spot on the 20 city 1999 ESDJCO North American tour. Shortly thereafter, the Sanger live PA was shelved in order to focus more attention on his DJ’ing, which in turn led to a series of three mix comps in less than one year, which, taken together, sold nearly 100,000 copies. It was during this time that he was approached by Nettwerk Management (Sara McLachlan, Coldplay, Avril Lavigne, Sum 41, etc.) to be only the second DJ signed to their DJ management roster, after Tiesto.
Since then, it's been strength to strength for Noel. His music is getting more attention than ever, with recent releases seeing play from Judge Jules (BBC Radio One and International Show), Armin Van Buuren (A State Of Trance), Markus Schulz (Global DJ Broadcast),Matt Darey, Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, and a unspeakably long list of DJ's at clubs and festivals around the globe. His touring, production and remix commitments persist in intensity, and the Summer of 2007 will see his first ever tour dates in Europe, the debut of a monthly radio show on XM and Worldspace, as well as a weekly show available for syndication, the long-overdue launch of his own Dissident Music imprint, several new collaborative projects and a slew of original releases.
Having left Nettwerk in 2004, Noel came full-circle In 2006, joining forces with long-time ally and friend, Mark Walker, who first released his music on (and employed him at) E-sa records in Miami some 13 years ago. Noel is now the first managed artist on Mark's new Strange World Entertainment roster. Of the change he says, “I feel honored to have been with a company like Nettwerk, but the time came to move forward. I'm now extremely blessed to have someone like Mark in my corner, who has been there with me since the start, believes fully in my music and my vision, and has an industry CV that's second to none.” In addition, Noel's bookings will now be handled worldwide by the brand-new Blushtonic agency in Washington DC, founded by former Yoshitoshi label manager, Stefania Yanachkov.
With the buzz and novelty of an exciting new artist yet the history of one whose first release came over twelve years ago, Noel has a unique and unstoppable momentum. He has only just begun to deliver on the promise of his career’s first decade. One can only imagine what he will do with his second.
