i used to listen to hip hop or rap or bass..what eva you call it..in the early 80's and 90's...now hip hop is more about lyrics then a nice beat and melody..thats why i hate it soooooo much...all you hear is the guy talking (err raping)...

Ok... i have been listening to Rap music since '94. i will admit that, as of this minute, 95% of the ap you hear anywhere (even the underground) is horrible. the last GREAT album to be released, that actually has meaning, is Nas - Stillmatic. if instead of saying "oh god, its rap, i can't listen to this," you actually listened, you would see that some of it is extremely meaningful. listen to Keep Your Head Up by Tupac. One Mic by Nas. oooo!!!!! actually, scratch those two. EVERYONE.... DOWNLOAD "Last Emperor and Poetic - One Life" and tell me that *ALL* rap music is pointless and sucks. that is one of the most beautiful songs ever created... especially when you learn that 3 months after this song was created, Poetic died of cancer after fighting it for approximately 2 years. i hope most of you change your mind about not just hip hop, but all musical genres. open your ears and just take a listen. but do yourself a favor and download that song.

I don't mind some hip-hop. But I generally much prefer trance or r&b. I can see why some people like it - it can have nice beats and catchy lyrics - but I generally don't like it cause it doesn't seem to change enough during the song like most trance does. Generally what you hear at the start is the same as you get throughout the song - with basically only new lyrics added throughout and maybe a new melody during the chorus. I don't mind this type of music but I prefer it when there's actual singing.
With most trance music at the start there is only a beat (which I actually find rather boring - but I know its helpful for mixing) and during the song new layers are added and I particularly love the breaks which are changing the whole time.
Though for some reason I do like this track:
Bubba Sparks - Ugly (Dunno why)

Hip-Hop = Top 40 dance for the absentminded

I'd rather listen to modern country music than hip-hop.

I hate singers who swear to sell records, that is the cheesiest thing any vocalist can do on a record period, IMO.

It's always funny hearing my brother talk about Tu-Pac's recordings from the grave....

However the biggest reason I dont like hip-hop. It has cheesy melodies that wouldn't hold up in any other music genre.(not even Italo-Disco) It uses melodic bass lines for god sake!!!! That's totally disgusting and kills the flow of a song completely. Otherwise the beats are ok, (see Enigma/Delerium for example of quality music w/hip-hop beats) if you can get past the self indulgent rappers talking about their benjamins and gold chains 24/7 and cheesy synth melodies w/ even cheesier looped samples that the lamen Fatboy Slim would be proud of... Then yes I say Hip-Hop is a great music genre.

Actually I disagree, hip-hop in the 80's was more about making a statement. Ala Public Enemy. Yes it has better music than the hip-hop of today, and thankfully it doesn't have the cheesy synthlines of the modern stuff. In some cases they are cheesier than Aqua (JayZ in this case)

Modern Hip-Hop would be better if the rappers learned how to actually make decent synthwork instead of using plinky plonky synth melodies to drive me nuts.

only time i hate hip hop is when people ask for me to spin it at partys when im throwing awesome trance tunes down that they neeeeeeeever would have heard of in their lifetimes. And they always ask me if i have "music to dance to". They are such idiots or at least un educated. I can listen to hip hop when it has a nice melody like stuff by the spooks or common or tribe called quest. But i think people need to come out of their hip hop shells and listen to real party music...

i used to listen to rap when i was in school (early high school) but it grew less appealing to me cause it looked like you had to have this tough gangsta image to sell records. IMO its all mostly talking about the exact same thing nowadays just to a different tune.
i used to be a HUGE fane of r&b but that changed quickly vecause of trance. that and the fact that all they sing about is what was said 5 years ago but to a bouncy tune

OK,I simply can't take this ingorant slammin' of a whole genre,I have to respond:

Look,I don't think WE should talk about HIPHOP getting commercialized when trance has the exact same problem.Trance producers are just as bad, using the same clichéd elements over and over again, not giving a FUCK about being innovative and keep doing it over and over to sell as much as possible.Talk about hypocrisy...

Anyways, there is a LOT of ignorance here.Underground rappers do NOT only want to break into the charts. That's bullshit.SOME do, but like ANY other music genre, there are a lot of underground lables and artists that FIGHT to stay underground by doing no promotion.(Def Jux Records for instance, who just released a compilation where the tracks were only played before on some obscure pirate radio station.)

Like mentioned before, you should do some RESEARCH on the music before making a statement that a whole genre is crap. And basing your opinions on hiphop on all the West Side-poseurs is in no way representative for the whole Hiphop genre,as this is only a fraction of what it is all about. And to all of you saying that hiphop has no real message to the people, well listen to tracks from Dead Prez or The Roots, and realize how fucking ignorant you are.

Why don't all you hiphop-haters dig a little deeper into the genre? You'll see that there is WAY more to it than you can possibly imagine.Check out tracks from labels like Stones Throw,Def Jux and BBE and artists like Aesop Rock,Quasimoto,Cannibal Ox,Common,Gang Starr(find a track called "Discipline".Guru (the rapper) will explain why you're wrong)A Tribe Called Quest....You'll soon understand that there are very different styles within hiphop that do not share the same attitude and music as the hiphop virtually everybody on this forum base their slammin' on.

Got the feeling I had to say that before I got my head bashed in...

i didnt flame and dont want to flame, but can i point out that i doubt hip hop haters would want to dig in deaper? i wouldnt because i dislike the music. i think the whole idea of this thread was to question why hip hop is the mainstream genre today, excluding pop but that will always be there. hip hop shares the same popularity with nu-metal (although this year the case seems to be not with nu metal being shunned out of the british charts at least now its been "done") and i think a few people have justified this reason with there posts. but it is inevitable you are going to get people slamming sumthing they dont like and are having put in there faces everyday, specially on a trance dedicated website...
