Nah, I think most ppl don't drink excessively during that last call.. they may want to get their hands on that last drink but in terms of drinking excessively? Now, if a bartender is giving someone who orders seven shots that many, then we have a problem

I don't think we can simply compare what happens here to what happens in other parts of the globe .. there are cultural differences.. heck, even alcohol potency varies among countries. Open alcohol is permitted in other parts but prohibited here.. so there are differences for sure.

what I think is brutal, however, are bars that stop serving at 2AM but then they kick you out right after anyways. Quite often you see ppl with that last drink, and then the bouncer comes by to kick you out. You should be able to chill with that drink knowing full well you have a good two hours to finish it.. hence my logic. Maybe someone can come up with something better? it's funny you mention that cuz i believe the London tube actually does shut down earlier than the TTC. the great thing tho is that without last call i end up partying till around 5-6 am when it starts up again lol..

either that or everything seems to be within walking distance there for some reason

in Berlin the subways ran 24/7 but at 20-30 minute intervals like you said. it wasn't bad since you knew exactly when they were coming and they would almost always arrive on time so you could basically plan the night out in advance.

I think a BIG part of those differences is a lack of last call to begin with. So its not engrained in the culture to play "beat the clock" every night at the bar.

For the record, most of those countries that dont have last call also have higher potency limits for booze. Yet we are the ones with the issues...

hmmmmm i see a trend here.. fewer regualtions = more self regulation perhaps??

i actually agree with you here. it seems sometimes that a lot of people don't realize that N. America is actually the exception to the rule by instituting last call. Is it actually proven that last call reduces alcohol related crimes?

Nowhere is this more apparent than in other parts of the world. I always notice when I'm traveling abroad that people aren't always out to get wasted when they hit a nite on the town. many people seem to just drink casually at their own rate. i know i did.

lol, go to East London or Germany, etc. Downtown Toronto is tame compared to some of those alcohol ridden places. As for drinking and driving, it doesn't help that we're a car-dependent country with so much suburban sprawl with it too.

And who knows about the drinking and driving rates.. I've heard horror stories overseas, and how the lack of policing that occurs there sometimes. Comparing models isn't that easy.
