ripping people off from music and esp. djing with it, and most especially when u know damn well its available for what.... $1, $2? that's just pathetic imo.

agreed, but in the old days, we spun with vinyl and cds, not mp3's that were ripped (off) cuz the sound quality on mp3's suck unless it's a high bit-rate copy (192 kb's or higher copy) copy. spending 1-2 bucks today per legal track is no problem , before we paid 15-20 bucks for a single record. so as you can imagine...the $$$$ added up fast.

At the end the profit is around similar an MP3 vs Vinyl, if you've seen the video on another thread on how vinyl are made you would see that it requires a lot of time, materials, and resources and cost of running a store. Whereas music are produced digitally and are exported via MP3 files so it's just a bunch of bits and bytes and are stored on servers on hard drives.

you know, one good thing about vinyl being so expensive, was that sets coming from lesser known DJ's in the scene was so much better ! i watched an interview on youtube conducted with a local toronto DJ (i think it was from the 90's/early 2000's, and dont remember his name either) but he was asked how he picked such great tracks, and all he could say was "i don't have a lot of money, so i gotta make every vinyl i buy worth it"

"Especially you" I said.
"You are virtually the ring leader, the way I see it."
Then, I blew out the candle.

CDs are on the way out as well... but I don't see any reason to ever play MP3s. Are you low on disk space or something?

..not really, I have 1 terra byte of drive space and then some... it's the process of converting .wav files from cd's or records into mp3's, it's a six to one compression ratio. therefore the sound is compromised big time. there is a format called ogg vorbis that retains the high fidelity of the source file when converted from .wav etc., but portable ipod players/dj software don't support it yet. you have you use soft players like dbpower Amp etc. so most dj's when spinning cd's, chances the source file is a .wav file, not .mp3.(stuff you find on limewire) High bit mp3's are better (up to 300 kbs) but you will pay for them.

google ogg vorbis and you will see what the pros say!.

i agree generally but i wouldn't go so far as to say that.
90% of the shit i get given to me is mp3, and i play it as such.
most other djs do too, if its provided in that format.

if its something given to me as a cdr then of course i expect it to have originated as a wav file, or in the case of buying tracks, then wavs for sure.

I only play WAVs... no sense in accepting anything less, I figure. I am against the use of using any sort of compressed format when DJing simply because disk space is ridiculously cheap these days... but that's just me.
