In order to build a website, you need to know the language used to structure them. Orbax already posted the basics, and it doesn't get much harder than that.

Step 2: Learn CSS

So, you found out how to tell the browser where paragraphs begin, and what should be a link. Probably, you now want to make your website look nice, changing the colour scheme, using different fonts, and putting things on their place.

Step 3: The big bad surprise

I've got to tell you one thing - not all browsers interpret their CSS and HTML the same way. You should consider resetting your CSS before doing anything else, and testing your website in as many different browsers as possible.

Edit: Oh, if you need any piece of software, I recommend PSPad.

Talk about overkill you flid. The guy is apart of a fucking research group looking to make a quick and easy website for fuck's sake.

I'm a PhD student. My graduation depends on this research + I get paid to do it. I am working on hybrid propulsion technology that aims to reduce the size and power requirements of IC engines in cars. This in turn will help to increase fuel efficiency (upto 70-80 mpg perhaps) + give all the environmental benefits of saving fossil fuels.

I wouldn't have said that if I didn't know he's smart enough to pick it up quite easily... besides he probably knows what he needs and what he might want to skip, and he knows he can count on us for help

You know, I take it you're not used to people thinking highly of you then, are you, Mikey? you sarcastically recommend Microsoft Publisher, and then doubts the learning skills of a very bright engineer with a master's degree. Repressed much? Oh, well, if I ever visit the UK I'm organising a TA Group Hug Meet-Up in Milton Keynes... you certainly need to feel loved

lol seriously Lira

I suck at HTML and learned how to use XML, SOAPs, WSDLs, CSS and web services connections in 2 days and that was integrating a unix / oracle system with windows / MSSQL

that was 2 days. Im sure he can learn what he needs to do in less than one.

However, without any understanding of the concept of elements and how they are interacting, it takes a little longer. w3 schools is a great source, but depending on what he is looking to WANT to learn, basic html and a free hosting site with his school will take damn near no time.

At least he knows he has some pretty sweet resources here if he wants to pursue further learning

Exactly, that's why I did mention CSS and HTML: If he thinks this is way too complicated for him, he's certainly going to ask for help or something... and I know we can help him out on this one

the only thing i was thinking WHOA on is if HTML is a bit of a scare that means using objects, classes, elements, etc is new stuff.

it takes a bit of tinkering in the object oriented world to be able to just walk up to a new language and get it quick.

I really only know .CSS in relation to the platform I develop and how to specifically modify thing like pagefields and tab childs and a bunch of crap that is non standard web elements.

although yesterday i learned that there is an XLS or something that defines the characteristics of XML. Which is weird to me because HTML is the display XML is the info and why would you do XML editing when the HTML is displaying it... they explained it but I still didnt get that

XSL is incredibly powerful, in spite of its simplicity.

XSLT, for example, is able to re-create an XML file without modifying the original file. So, if you want the XML to be organised in a different fashion, you can count on these XSL transformations. I, for example, often use it when I need to convert an XML file to CSV.

XSL-FO and XPath are things I've never really had to use, so I think Wikipedia can do a better job at explaining what they do than I ever could
