To ship this at UPS they told me it would cost $462.00, which is definitely far beyond what I would be happy paying. I just calculated it on the united states post office website and it's like 235.00.
Has anyone ever travelled with or shipped a desktop computer?
any tips on packaging?
thanks

What I suggest is calling the airline(s) you are flying with and asking, first, what the weight restriction is on your checked baggage, and second, whether they have any type of restriction on checked electronics, as well as carry-on electronics.
Once this is covered, I suggest calling an insurance company and get baggage insurance for your flight. You of course should pack it properly such that it shouldn't get damaged, however, to cover your ass just in case, you should insure it as well.
Make sure to ask the insurance rep that they will cover DAMAGE to items in your baggage, and get a clear and concise, detailed explanation of what will and will not qualify you for a claim. Also, get the persons name, their agent ID, and their location. Document what they told you and who they were, and if you were to have any issues later when making a claim, you have that to back you up.
Baggage insurance is usually not that expensive (80-100CAD), so it would be less than the S&H you would have to pay otherwise.
Then shove it in a suitcase with proper packaging, and pad it with clothes.
This should help solve your problem, and cover all your bases.
