i was parking my car in some basement car park at a mall over the weekend when this young couple walked past. They were going to back to their car or something. Anyways, as the walked past me the guy suddenly broke into the melbourne shuffle and his girl stood there watching and clapping her hands with glee.

i nearly pissed myself laughing and reversed into a concrete pillar.

The musical merits of rap aside, dancing like that to it just doesn't work at all.

I didn't know that anyone outside of the Melbourne knew what the shuffle was!

Awesome!

Some info for your foreigners:

This is almost an exclusive "rave" dance, in that it's done basically only at trance/hard trance/hardstyle events, which I seldom go to.

At more "mainstream" events like electro-house and more commercial techno/electro acts like Trentemoller, I get people coming up to me and hassling me all the time; "why the fuck are you dancing like that, go back to your raves", either that or "man! that is so fucking cool, teach me!".

I find most of the videos on the internet are quite gay, most of the people are tryhards and completely uncoordinated despite having the stepping action mastered. I prefer a more "low-key" style which doesn't involve putting your arms out and soaring like an aeroplane, nor punching/kicking the air, but rather subtly thrusting the arms downward with hands at hip level.

I regards to "learning" this dance, when I was younger, before I'd ever been to a rave or knew what the fucking dance was, I slowly started doing my own version of it over a few years. Then one night I saw a dude doing a really refined, clever version of my dancing, and I approached him and he said "yeah, it's called the shuffle", at which point I realised I didn't make it up myself. The point here is that you don't really just "learn" and suddenly start doing it...it just comes naturally from hanging around the scene in Melbourne, though I'm sure if anyone in Canada or whatever wanted to learn they could watch the videos.

Once you start sliding your feet, stepping becomes the most unnatural thing in the world, and it's hard to go back. At times it's a bit of a problem for me when I go to classy clubs where people don't like ravers, even if I'm dressed well.

Phat pants are officially the gayest piece of clothing ever. I'd rather be seen in a Borat style g-string.

/shit talk

p.s this is huge in Singapore/Malaysia because of all the exchange students who picked it up here then went home.

p.p.s I do mid-shuffle 360 airborne spins (when I'm maggot). Only seen one other person who does/can. I rock.

psssssssst it's a global phenomenon - they're coming to get you. Eeek - hide your daughters.

I was going to buy a PHD (foreign translation: "pure hard dance") hoodie then wear it to like 161, Prince, Boutique etc (foreign translation: mainstream clubs) and see what people's response would be.
