No one is forcing you to do it, but why would any smart employer ignore an advantage that significant? Besides, the whole point is that spanish is supposedly becoming a significant part of american culture, at which point it stops being just "their" language.
I can only see good coming out of this. Another language would enrich the culture greatly. Besides, I've always thought native english speakers could benefit greatly from speaking more than one language (and I'm sure alot of people would agree with me on this), and what better way to do that than to be immersed within it's culture? |
I can see where you're coming from with this. But from my perspective, this is going to cause a lot of racial tension and divide with not only the whites and Mexicans, but legal and illegal immigrants also. The majority of conservatives here in the States are not for learning another language, they'd rather have the immigrants learn English instead. They're already upset that Congress tried to pass an amnesty bill here a few months ago. Complicating things more are groups like La Raza demanding equal rights for non-citizens here, and suggesting that the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo be overturned.
And what about other immigrants coming from non-Spanish speaking countries to live in the US? Would you really have them learn 2 languages just to be able to survive here? English is already difficult to learn as it is.
It's one thing to suggest that we learn Spanish to enrich our own culture, but it's another thing to be demanded by foreigners to learn it simply to accomodate them. I would hope both the Democrats and the equal rights groups would back off on pushing this agenda, because if they keep throwing this on our faces, there won't be any benefits coming our way, only conflict.
