Yup, we live in an age full of toxic products, and for most, we have no idea what they are made of, or why they are bad.
Why limit anything? Why not import some foot and mouth desease from the UK, or some more toxic toothpaste from China. People should just know better than to buy that stuff. We should leave it to each consumer to decide.
We have regulatory agencies for a reason: to set standards, and enforce such standards because it is just too daunting for each individual to regulate each product on their own. If you had to research every single product, every single piece of food you consume, you would spend your entire life doing so. There just is not enough time in a day to work, sleep, eat and research.
Say we were to regulate each product by our selves, where would we get the information? From the supplier? Who will force the supplier to provide that information? A regulatory agency. If there is no agency, then we have to trust the corporation to do it on their own. We all know how corps decide whether to issue a recall or not, so I am not trusting them to be 100% honest. |
plastic bags have nothing to do with foot and mouth disease. Nice one though

I promised myself to avoid these non-debates (whining).
there is no slippery slope...it's just more inconsistency from Jay.
I bet that he has little to no problem with gov't stepping in to regulate industries that spew waste into the air and the water, but now there's a problem because they may address plastic bags? how does this make us feel like "children", but addressing macro issues does not?
I'd be less concerned about this...and more concerned about the science behind it. i.e. is plastic actually worse than paper? a very quick google search suggests that it may be better...but I have no real knowledge on whether or not that's true. |
If someone can prove to me that using a plastic bag will cause me harm like air pollution and water pollution can, then hey maybe ill have a different opinion. But to me this is nothing more than yet another feel good leftie approach to force social engineering just so they can look like they are doing something good for the world.
Plastic bags are fine with me. They are multi purpose, i can reuse them 100 times over and they can be recycled. What you choose to do with them after you use them is your decision.
And if they really do take 1000s of years to breakdown like is claimed, then we dont really have to worry about ground pollution coming from them if they are thrown out, do we?
How many people here use batteries and then throw them out after? If the government wanted to do something theyd make it easy to recycle batteries. And please note that i have given suggestions on how to use them, not BAN them like most people would probably suggest. Banning should ALWAYS be the last step, not the first step. Im more afraid of mercury, lead and cadium from 1 battery in the garbage than 1000 plastic bags.
Quite simply, this plastic bag nonsense is just one more "wag the dog" policy in a long list of many coming from our government(s) these days.
