so (and i'm addressing this to whoever feels like answering it)... in your opinion, does cutting out a pretty huge portion of the middle of a song - like getting rid of 4 minutes of the track because it's too long, or getting rid of an annoying breakdown/section of the track - constitute an edit? i mean if i heard a track in a set and then searched down the tracklist and bought it and it was notably different than what i was expecting, i'd probably be a bit annoyed.

Where would your annoyance be directed?

In any case, sure it would be an edit, but is it an edit worth mentioning. In a live setting no one is going to realize anything and i guess if you did it on a promo mix, I dunno... unless I was really altering the tune beyond just structural changes, I personally wouldn't bother.

If I take out a breakdown or a section, not really worth it- if I for example, added a breakbeat section or chopped up another section and made some new patterns and stuff, yeah- I'd call it an edit.

if somebody asked on the spot, I'd say mention it, but I wouldn't put it in a tl or a chart, because then you get into nitpicking & throwing 'edit' after everything. imo, it takes rearranging (not just chopping up) and/or additional sounds to be an edit worth mentioning in writing. I actually like seeing a TL with no edits listed, but in which all the tracks sound different in the mix. Leaves more to the imagination.

ok, for example - i just got a track that goes from the breakdown into this annoying section with sort of distorted sounding video gamey siren noises (sorry that's the best i can explain it, lol)... and i removed the whole breakdown and epic noisy part so the track is basically just chillin' all the way through.

if i end up using it in a demo, i just don't know if that's worth mentioning or not.

The more of it you played after the part you cut out, the more I'd be inclined to say to call it an edit. I'll leave it to the semi-pros, though

Personally I'd call it an edit, but just make sure you're not all pretentious about it. For example, not be like "(DJ Lucid Super-Crazy-Awesome edit)" or something...but just saying (edit) or (edited).

That's my opinion.

He is the worst to do that as far as i can tell in the pro ranks. The fact that so many people love Lawler amazes me.
Never finishes gigs, a rotten prick, now to make it worse he has Audiofly to produce tracks so he can add a few hi hats and the baseline of Simpler to it that every one will eat up because its Steve "I look homeless" Lawler. Recnetly i was told by someone they didn't like the style of music i played. Later that week i saw a Lawler track listing with a few of the same tracks as in my set in it. The funny thing is she won't like it when i play it, but if Lawler plays its like OMG JESUS TOUCHED MY CROTCH. (Greg confirm or deny). The only DJ worth worshipping anymore id Dave Clarke, and i don't even like bang your tits off hard techno. He just is the only DJ that doesn't fucking care about whats in and actually still uses 4 decks.

/ rant

that felt good

pretty much +1 right here.

i think in todays age of technology, this sort of thing just becomes second nature... i personally end up doing a little bit of something to a looot of what I play.

i think unless you've done something great enough to want your name attached to that edit of the song, you shouldnt label it as an edit.

i think thats vague enough to work for everyone

RJT getting down with my chicken sandwich edit.

fixed

ps the worse thing is when people call something a remix and do not do anything but add bits of other songs on top without crediting them. Accessability to technology makes people think they are talented for clicking a mouse 6 times. Call it a bootleg at least, if you say remix without having permission from the label, you should just change your name Greg Downey.

making a kick ass mix with your name on it>taking credit for edits. When i do them i don't write anything on them. If people wonder why a track is different when they buy it, well that is what they get for trainspotting.

pps if you play another tracks drum pattern over a breakdown you take out the breakdown..its called mixing, not a live edit.
