Cubase is horrible at it. It does use all the cores, but if you have many live inputs the amount of "Baseline" CPU that gets chewed up is horrendous. If I have 32 I/O running, I'm at 1/3 CPU load.
Doesn't sound so bad until you realise that on a standard core 2 duo CPU the load is around 15% doing the same thing... To put that in perspective, I have 8 cores accross the 2 clovertown CPUs running at 2.4GHz on a 1006Mhz Bus (No, they're not "Release" parts for those trying to work out what chips I actually have), the core 2 Duo has 2 cores running at 1.86 GHz!
Bad bad bad Steinberg!
Pro Tools on the otherhand is awesome. Very very well handled multi threading. I can run flat out with no problems and the amount of plugins I can have running is insane.
So now I write & sequence on the core2duo, and record and mix on the clovertown machine..
I don't know about other apps as I don't use them.. Your Milage may Vary.. |
Heh. I was just looking at purchasing two E5335s, with a SUPERMICRO X7DAE. So Cubase doesn't handle Quad's so well does it eh? Good to know. Although like you, I was mainly interested in boosting the performance of my LE system. Most of us don't have the money for a HD Digidesign setup, so I'm going to build an "8 core" system.
Hmmm. I think I'll PM you.

Ok, had some extensive producing sessions with this baby
First of all, my system runs pretty stable (Windows XP SP2). As i sayd im running a Core 2 Duo E6850 on an Asrock ConRoe1333-D667 mainboard. 2 Gigs of 800 Mhz Patriot ram .. |
why do you have 800mhz memory on a 667mhz memory supported board ?

just wanted to know, what cooler do u have?
im probably going to get a NOCTUA NH-U12F or a SCYTHE NINJA PLUS REV. B, but I'm not sure yet... any other suggestions?
i want smth not that big, not that hot and not that noisy :P
ohh, also, what soundcard do u have? |
i have a scythe ninja rev b, it`s pretty good, don`t even have the fan mounted on it and it cools an e6850 very good, mine in an antec p182 case, around 30 degrees idle, and i gues not more then 55 stressed.
also have an emu 1820m, works pretty well, even on 24/192
the e6850 can handle a lot.
edit, mobo is a gigabyte 965p ds3, cheap but good.

don`t know, but isn`t bad if it works fine, in case you buy a new board someday you allready have 800mhz memory and it doesn`t cost much more then 667 memory.

i just thought maybe someone ripped you off for those prices, but didn`t know all your hardware, mem and mobo, so that`s all.
p5b deluxe is more expensive then ds3 so the price you`ve paid may be not to bad.
