The US Federal Government has a department specifically for Veterans Affairs. Veterans are eligible for medical care at hospitals specifically run by the VA and it's subsidized, but I don't know how much they pay or if they pay at all.
However, that department, despite what the Bush administration trumpets about how well it cares for its soldiers, is heavily stressed because of budget cuts. Don't jump to conclusions that Americans weren't outraged about the Walter Reed scandal, because it was actually a very, very major news story in America. And to be fair, the only reason major public attention was drawn to how poorly run the facility was was because the Washington Post investigated rumors about it. It's a double-edged sword.
But it's not the only problem. Recently, a soldier from my state came back from Iraq and tried to get into a Veterans hospital and was put on a waiting list and subsequently turned away. He hung himself a few days later. There are a lot of problems veterans face but for a wide variety of reasons. The VA is simultaneously poorly run and underfunded, but that is less the fault of the US military itself as it is a civilian government that doesn't realize the vulnerability of people who serve in the wars. |
dear Perfect_Cheezit,
a thoughtful answer to a impulsive question is wasted effort.
