Some people spend a lot of time at the beach and still have their life going on during that time.. Getting ahold of friends to come meet you, making plans for the rest of the day.. not to mention all the other funciotnalities of a phone.
As far as other technologies as well? radios, BBQ's each sorts that's all technology.
