I've had tinnitus all my life and have never heard pure silence because of it, I hear a hissing/ringing sound instead, reasonably loud too. But then I am constantly having to ask people to repeat themselves because I cant always hear them properly. That said, my hearing is very good at high frequencies, I can hear up to about 24k and can hear bats clicking as they fly past. I can also hear cicadas which caused quite a stir once as everyone thought I was nuts because I was the only one who could hear their shrill shouting - and neither of my digital cameras video modes recorded it

I'm going to get some proper earplugs someday though, it would be worth the money.

I'm somewhat similar. Many times I have a hard time concentrating when someones talking when there are other loud noises around. I think with me it the range of human speach that's effected. I should get it checked one day just to confirm.
