Also I too can be critical if I notice something's wrong, unfortunately it's other things that aren't in order at the moment not the music itself, so to criticise him for not playing electro or minimal or whatever would be like shooting yourself in the foot especially because I and I imagine most of his audience doesn't like it, so what point would it be that he'd play it other than occasional song on a random ASOT ep. ?
To make you guys happy, I suppose, you may say he's a crowd pleaser,
but tell me what other function does a DJ have than to please the crowd, it's just a question of WHICH crowd they're pleasing, happy slappy hands in the air people with playing cheesy shit, or murky shady geeks from the TA with playing minimal; what would you choose and what is the difference in the end? Nothing, different DJs exist for different crowds, it's called diversity indeed and thank god it exists.

Well said.

In order to win this magazine, what did Armin and Tiesto have to do. Sell their souls down a really rocky path. Alienating longstanding fanbases so they could touch base with a new "pop culture" crowd.

Jeez, whatever next. I won't predict anything, I'm sure David Lewis is plotting away as we type.

I still can't believe that DJ Mag and "achieve" are being used in the same sentence around here.

I'd imagine that they are doing what they want to and what makes them happy.

Armin made it very clear that he wants to not only make himself happy but keep his "fans" happy as well. If he is going to do that for millions of listeners, in my opinion he is unfortunately going to have to sell out of his own personal tastes from time to time. I wouldn't be surprised if guys like him have an agent that says, "Ya know, this tune ... is really rocking the clubs right now, you might want to play it." And I bet while he would probably get a rush off of that feeling of playing it for thousands of people going nuts, it's not a track that he would have personally selected on his own. But who knows, maybe I and others are looking into it way too much and that's not the case... but it could also be very likely and it is what I think is going on.

Both of them landed on that poll around 20th place the first time,
that's because then the true fans voted for them probably really
thinking it's for a good cause.
Obviously in this time til today everyone knows what DJ Mag really is, I am as alienated as the next guy believe me.
But this argument isn't about the poll, it's about the music,
and the fact remains that he's playing what majority likes to hear
and that's why people listen to him, of course with the proper
campaign 'success' came, there's only one way from here as we know and that's down.
Let me make it perfectly clear for you to understand, I like what he's playing and that's why I feel appropriate to write about it, but your argument against him is the very fact that he's playing what I want to hear!
So I ask you why do you want to prevent him to play what I like to listen to instead play what you like to listen?
Who do you have a problem with ?
Me, or do you resent him for not playing what you like ?

Go listen to whichever DJ caters to your needs please.

I certainly don't have a problem with you enjoying what he plays, and I doubt MichaelBoogerd! does either. What we do have a problem with, is bellends claiming ASOT is amazingly diverse and Armin saying he spins "everything" when, this is CLEARLY not the case. "I play a select breed of trance, mostly from my labels & sub-labels, over and over again to masses of people who scream every time I raise both my arms or walk out on catwalks to greet them during breaks from my oh-so-difficult mixing and track-selecting..." would have been a much better answer.

Listen, genre naming has gone to shit over last few years,
if we're honest dutch trance doesn't even exist anymore,
it's just an idea of what it used to be, or perhaps it's the
discontinued tuneage from the early 90s, whichever the case
it's all still got one thing in common, it's EDM, and that's
what I like to refer to it nowadays.
If anything you can blame him for poor selection of words,
but before you do that keep in mind that he's pushing a product
so he'll say whatever he seems appropriate to tag it.
The fact that you disagree with it won't make any difference.

Neither will any of this discussion. Every trance DJ on earth claims diversity in their record collections & sets...few have anything to substantiate those claims...this is just another example...

I'm intrigued as to what this "ambient, weird sounding music" he speaks of sounds like. Armin should indulge himself a bit more and shock his audience again, like the time he played that one hour tune from Ben Liebrand.

Showing respect to other genre is an important thing. And maybe he does by playing a diverse playlist. But it's kinda frustrating for people who are really in those genre.

precisely... the naivety of the fanbase is clearly evidenced in the interviewee themselves, who believed the dribble enough to ask specific questions about Armin's own hype machine.

that's what I have noticed after reading many reviews being posted here.
You can easily tell if the interviewer is a blind fanboy. The questions become really dull and often circulates around the greatness of the producer/dj.

Notice the difference between being a fan and being a fanboy. The latter one very rarely puts a tough questions to his idol.
