Yep. I went to a game at Old Trafford this past March to watch Manchester United play host to Bolton and I felt very safe the entire time. I know they do segregate the fans of the visiting team into a section to curb the fights during the games. It's probably not as safe during a derby (inter-city) match, like Arsenal-Tottenham, Newcastle-Sunderland, etc.
I wasn't shocked at all with seeing no violence. However, I was shocked to see you can place bets on the game
On a side note, this was a dream come true for me (since I support Manchester United). Easily one of the best experiences in my life. If you like soccer, worth the steep price you pay to experience the atmosphere.

You scouse bastard!
I watch the games occasionally and for the big matches that aren't on FSC, I make it out to Nevada Smith (the footy bar near Webster Hall) since they have Setanta Sports. I was there last week for Super Sunday (Liverpool-Man United, Arsenal-Chelesa) and the place was packed with the supporters singing their songs.
