the last time i had problems with canada customs was when i was coming back to canada from buffalo. i had driven to Eastern, PA to buy firecrackers and had about $200USD worth of explosives in my friend's trunk. on out way back to canada we stopped at dutyfree and i bought two cartons of cigarettes. i wasnt exempt from any tax because we had only been in the usa for about 5 hours. the lady at the border gave us a piece of paper and told us to pull over. we pulled over and started shitting our pants a little bit but still a little calm because i thought i just had to walk inside, show the paper, pay my duties and leave. so me and a friend went inside (the driver stayed in the car). the first person we saw when we walked in was a little guy that looked like joe dirt behind the counter. he took a look at our paper, went in the back and came out a door on our side of the counter with a big binder and said "wheres the vehicle?". as we were walking to the car he asked which one of us was the driver and i said "neither. the driver is over there standing next to the car." customs guy said "oh one of those. lazy driver."
we get to the car and joe dirt says "open the trunk." the three of us looked at each other and were ready to start running. my friend's hands were shaking when he was unlocking the trunk with the key. right when joe dirt looked in the trunk he said "what the fuck is this?" and he starts going through all the paper bags full of firecrackers and bottle rockets. he asks me "do you know its illegal for you to bring these over? i could impound your vehicle right now." i said "i didnt know. its our first time buying fireworks in the states." he gave me this look and said "you must've known because you didnt declare it at the border." all that went through my head was JASON YOU ARE SO BUSTED!!
he starts looking through some more of the stuff in the bags and said "you guys are lucky you got me today because i dont give a fuck about this shit. get outta here." and he tore up my duty paper for my cigarettes. he started walking away and the three of us were still standing there stunned. then i said "lets get the fuck outta here before he changes his mind." and we bolted.
so ya.. i dont know why i just told you that story but whatever.

edit: oh. border people are usually quite nice as long as you are polite with them. but you cant over-do it cuz they can detect the fakeness.

honestly.. ive only had problems coming back from canada.. or crossing over into montreal. if i cross through the falls i never have a problem. once we, me and my two friends, were separated, questioned profusely, searched, interrogated some more and finally let go.. with no explanation or anything. The whole process took over two hours, and 2 of us had fake IDs on us.. which they didnt find thank god. It was probably the scariest thing ever, even though I knew we weren't doing anything wrong. The border patrol can be pretty damn intimidating haha.

if you always have problems returning to your own country then you (or one of your friends) might be flagged.
