gehzumteufel is right on the money (no pun intended).

shit food is cheaper. why? because processed junk doesnt cost as much to produce, nor expire as quickly. its far cheaper to buy 1Kg of frozen nuggets than to get a 1Kg fresh steak. canned vegetables are also cheaper than fresh ones.

The bottom line is physics, conservation of energy: you can't store any calories if your body uses up more energy than it takes in through food.

Some food will be worse for your health in other ways (e.g. lots of simple sugar will tend to raise insulin levels and raise risk of diabetes), but weight itself is a function of calories burned vs. calories ingested. The only exception to this is edema, where your body is storing a ton of water in addition to fat (as has happened with some enormously obese people); but that isn't a factor for most people.

The "crappy food is cheap" argument doesn't make any sense. If you eat ten french fries a day and lead an active lifestyle, you're simply not going to get fatter. If a person has enough money to eat himself to obesity, then he also has the money to remain at the same weight, simply by eating less.

I'm not saying that it's easy to lose or maintain weight; for some people it's very hard. But the "cheap food makes people fat" argument flies in the face of fundamental physical facts.

3 cans tuna = $1.80 ~90 grams protein
1 bag brown rice = $2.55 ~666 grams carb

We're way over on RDA for calories here.

Total stands at $4.35.

Spend $15 on a 90 day daily vitamin so that's $.17 a day and our total now is: $4.52.

Take the additional $3.48 and spend it on fruits, veggies, milk, whatever. Mix it up every day.

I know it's extreme but I'm just illustrating a point. If someone wants to maintain a relatively healthy lifestyle, it doesn't have to be expensive.

You forgot to factor in the requisite Chipotle budget, good Sir.

You've never looked at your diet like that? Aren't you trying to get big and ripped?
