There are good female DJs across most EDM genres! Here are just a few across the top of my head:

Trance

Sandra Collins

Breaks

Baby Anne used to be good, but when I saw her it seemed that she was lost in the K-Hole...

good locals: Baby Gurl

House

DJ Heather is one of my favorite Deep House DJs ATM. Bumpy, funky Chicago House... mmmm

Colette is another one to check out from OM Records.

good locals: Miss Valentine (Atlanta)

Hard House

Lisa Lashes almost got me into the genre, with her awesome Summer Bangers mix for Mixmag...

DJ Irene... do I need to say much more?

and I'm sure I'm missing lots of good female DJs in DnB and other styles that I don't know intimately.

While I haven't personally seen a bias against local female DJs, I can why we are having trouble adding more females to the line-ups. I generally consider the EDM community to be open and welcoming to new DJs, but what about the club owners and promoters and their "sex sells" marketing mentality? I bet more potential females DJs are turned away by the go-go/pole dancers, flyers depicting scantily-clad women, and the general "stripper" feel to some shows (we've all seen the college nights with the Wet T-Shirt contests, or the "Sexiest Girl wins $500", or the "Ladies' Night" hooks) than by the other DJs, Producers, and fans.

I don't see this trend changing anytime soon, as the current model is still lucrative for promoters. Maybe we can get some female promoters/club owners to push more "girl-friendly" events...?

If women are supposedly worse at math and science, wouldn't it be logical to assume they excel in the arts, social sciences, and communication, and by association, music? If you think EDM is the only genre of music that involves math and technology, you've got a lot of reading to do.

Actually, speaking of reading to do, recent research has shown that proficiency with music is more closely related to proficiency with math than any form of art to speak of. I don't mean to demean women, but if in fact they were by nature worse at math (which I don't believe for a second since my mother's got a BS in CS), then they wouldn't be good at music, either.

But more to the point, women can be just as skilled in making music and doing well in the field as men. The main problem is exactly what eletrikal has stated: women are not encouraged to do well in music, and the subculture of EDM is very intolerant of skilled female producers and DJs, as montana has pointed out.

Maybe cognitive differences play a minor role, but even in that regard, I have to wonder, since I hear the cognitive differences have been shown by some to be developmental as much as they are biological.

+1

You can't critique something that doesn't provide enough of a "control" for demographics sake, so to speak. The statistics of this argument leave the original poster without a leg to stand on.

Of course, you could make some pretty ugly arguments out of this connotation... but that's merely senseless hating without enough information.

DJ Sammy might not be the best producer, but she's got a really good voice.

Stupid thread.

Maybe EDM has a low percentage of women because it's full of dinky twerps who like to bloviate about why having testicles makes a person better at music.
