I think the cut is stupid since it's a cut based on consumption - would've helped everyone if this just went into an income tax break instead. I think it would've been better to keep that 1% and use that to fund things that would help offset the current/pending hit on manufacturing/tourism as a result of the exchange rate (Just one idea...)

There is also the administrative/accounting headaches this change forces - I lol'd when I saw my receipt from Canadian Tire showing GST 7% 0.00 underneath the GST 6% amount and at the bottom stating that they need to include that line in there for their accounting systems.

Between paying down the debt and spending on infrastructures with surpluses, I choose spending on infrastructures.

But since the (stupid) govt doesn't want to spend on infrastructures, I prefer he gives me back the money, as little as the amount is, I prefer to mismanage it than it being mismanaged in Ottawack. The more a govt has money, the more he'll waste it.

Also I would have prefered the federal transfering taxation points to provinces so they decided what to do with them as most provinces have trouble closing their budgets... but i guess it feels good for M. Harper to play Mr. Santa and reap credit for the next elections (watch out for that tax return cheque in March).

A 1% GST tax break isn't the best scenario, but I will take it anyways.

this "hippy" would prefer that the gov't keep the billions in revenue and use it to benefit everyone.

saving the rich consumers of our society 1% in GST isn't helping very many people.

this has been rehashed to death...but when you remove rent/mortgage, groceries and tuition from the equation (since none of those are GST taxable), you'll see that the vast majority of people will save relatively little money from a 1% GST reduction.

1% GST reduction on $30,000 (far more than what the average FAMILY will spend on GST taxable items in a year) = $300 savings over the course of a YEAR.

Stats to back up how LITTLE this cut means for Canadians:

http://www.fraserinstitute.org/Comm...e.aspx?nid=4179

So the average FAMILY earned ~$63k BEFORE income tax was deducted. So take income taxes off. Then subtract mortgage or rent (non-GST taxable) and then subtract most groceries (non-GST taxable). i.e. the average FAMILY has nowhere near the 30k I used in my example to spend per year on GST taxable items. So the average FAMILY isn't saving anything near $300/year.

so if you're happy with "a few extra bucks" in your pocket each week (literally), great...but the CPC and fans of this GST cut can fuck off if they think that the cut puts any significant sum back into most people's pockets.

wouldn't that money be better spent paying down our debt or investing in our decaying infrastructure? I'd also rather see it spent on programs than see a *consumption* tax cut.

I'm curious to see why the outrage now?

This was one of key Conservative election promises, and I don't recall people getting their panties in knots back then.

^^^ the CPC is running as big (or bigger) a surplus than the previous Liberal administration, IIRC when the figures last came out...?

I don't know about others, but I ranted against the CPC's first GST cut...and if you do a search on here, you'll find me bitching about this 2nd one too, shortly after it was announced

MarkT you also forget that his base in Alberta pays only one tax and its the GST, so for them over there its a big deal to lower it from 7 to 5. (thats over 25% in GST reduction).

The alternative is that people vote for the Liberals, and with Mr. Clown Dion at its head, its not going to happen, or worse with Trudeau jr.
