Regardless of morality, without alcohol and cigs, our economy would literally collapse.

Hence, the goverment is attempting to gradually fade-out cigarette sales over the next two decades, until eventually there are none.

The only problem is that there are still 14 year old dip shits taking it up...

It'a definitely not in the best interest of the general public that these things can be bought over the counter anywhere with valid proof of age.

trying to make illegal anything that has been a big part of society for so long, probably isn't going to go down well...

alcohol isn't that bad for you so long as you're sensible

also pretty much everyone knows the effects of smoking now and education has decreased the number of smokers, and making it illegal might reduce that even further, but there'd still be a large number of people looking for ways to get their fix...

if you can say that, then I assume you don't stand for democracy...

the great thing about tobacco is that people have the information/know how bad it is for them, but the choice is still there for them: i quite enjoy a calming smoke every once in a while, or while wasted on pills (double dose of badness ) the best people can do for defense against pills is claim ignorance: i.e: "as far as i know, there are no long-term side-effects"

about the whole banning tobaco thing, i think it'd just be a big step backwards: the use of any form of drug should be run thru some sort of governed body (controlling contents etc (which cigarettes are)), and the people should be made aware of the side-effects, and then let to run wild
i think there would be far fewer OD's, and possibly even less use (even if it's more use, at least it's safer, and bodies would be in place to control consequences) if all drugs were legalized--

but that's just a dream

I meant that you are served / buy standard drinks, you can be resposnible by knowing how much you are drinking.

You don't often know how strong a drug is before you take it.

australia isnt the kind of country that would ban smoking, that's all. its fairly entrenched in our society, and asides from smokers, there'd still be opposition to a ban from liberals and civil libertarians etc.

the topic is too polarising for any politician to touch it. and i dont know exactly which level of government we're talking about anyway, if its a state's right... well, you get the picture.

it's an unwarranted infringement on the right to be a dickhead what's next? motor vehicles? junk food? stupidity?

if smoking is ever banned in australia, it will be well after we're all dead.

I don't kid myself and think it will be made illegal any time soon, but I think it will beaten down to the point til it's about as popular as smoking of tobacco in pipes is these days...almost nonexistent.
