well yea. its a low ceiling very compact club where music sounds amazing regardless of what is played. i have gone home after zone and got some tracks i heard at zone that were sick, but when i played them at home, they were crap tracks but they sounded so good at zone. i was puzzled

+1 Spot on.

I'm definitely not feeling the tech-house/minimal beats that seem to dominate a lot of main-stay DJs sets in toronto these days... Nathan Barato, Carlo Lio, VJs, are all (from what I've heard) characterizing their sets with this new influx of minimal tech-house influence. Admittedly, it sounds really good and I enjoy it...but it's just not what I drive to Toronto to dance to. Doesn't get me going like tribal or even (yikes) electro.

And agreed, zone is blessed with low ceilings, and good surprisingly acoustics that just ramp up any tune played down there. All done on a shoe-string budget of audio equipment too, I'm told.

Personally, I can't wait for the minimal-influence fad to end... but that's the way these trends work themselves out.

I agree with Jeff, but I'm finding too many DJs are overplaying this style, just the same as too many DJs jumped on the new electro sound of the last couple years.

Personally in my advanced clubbing age I'm finding that I like a lot [and I mean excessive] variety of styles in a night, ranging from breaks, to techno, drum and bass, and many many forms of house. I'm much more appreciative of DJs who bring their own flair to their sets rather than those playing the sound 'that's hot' at the time.

Sure, the DJ is there to play what the people like, but rather than hearing the same sound from DJs week after week, I like going out and listening to a variety of styles at any number of different venues.

Production duos like Silicone Soul or the H-Foundation, for example, are still out playing deep house, years after the genre all but dissappeared in the late 90's, but it's quality electronic lounge music that you can still groove to if you're just planning on a few drinks instead of a hardcore night out.

i agree that minimal owns cz.. as does the the dark techy sound overall. i heard chromophobia and doppelwhipper my first time there in the summer and was amazed

and i think a lot of people don't realize that pretty much all local dj's put at LEAST a couple tracks that could be labelled minimal into their sets these days, they just think it's house

Here's the thing. Minimal used to be just another branch of techno - ie, minimal techno - long before minimal started appearing across all genres. It drives me nuts to hear that Marco Carola threw down a techno set, not a minimal one...because in my mind, proper minimal IS techno and when I hear Carola sets, that's what I hear. The linearity, the loops, the stripped down bare-bones propa electronic sounds - that is techno to me, and minimal techno encompasses the same thing.

Personally I love minimal, but I like a lot of sounds so a good set to me is one that goes everywhere...the kind of stuff Sebo K, Anja Schneider, Guido Schneider, sometimes Steve Bug, Carola, Beyer, Luciano, Hawtin - they're all doing an excellent job of taking minimal and working it in with all kinds of other sounds.

Minimal + vocal house = <3
