well Tiesto and Armin are certainly not doing anything to help it. because of them most people think trance is the watered down commercial electronic pop music they play

Hasn't trance died already? Several years ago, in fact.

spot on.

Trance is dead. Long live Trance.

I wish people would stop saying trance is dead. The fact is that it really still is commercially viable and anyone who thinks otherwise is seriously deluded. Dead doesn't mean the genre is devoid of creativity, it just means the genre has a distinct dearth of artists contributing to the creative well, and a dearth of committed consumers. Trance has both, even if the most commercially viable stuff really is devoid of creative drive.

Directionless and cheesy? Yes. Dead? No.

But whatever, people have been tooting this horn for a while, and just because it sounds dumb doesn't mean people won't keep tooting it in the future.

As much as I'll agree with the author on certain parts of the article, the fact that Kanye West is even mentioned in this article stifles my ability to take him/her seriously.

Either way, I still enjoy trance and find myself finding a good new release here and there, but progressive and deep house have become the new staple of my music diet.

This sort of "don't get what's popular" attitude is just as shallow as the "I only listen to the popular stuff" attitude.

It isn't. Plain and simple. Theres enough kids and enough new markets for it to keep going for another 5-10 years even with the lowest possible quality standards imaginable. Yeah it will get worse and worse, tired ideas will continue to be recycled, but so long as Armin, PVD, Tiesto etc keep marketing themselves as SUPER MEGA DJs and play in 5-10-15 thousand capacity stadium events to thousands of clueless kids, trance will always have an audience, always sell enough CDs and always get the most votes in DJ Mag.

The rest of us who like good music can go see excellent DJs at small intimate venues and have the time of our lives...I don't see trance getting in the way...

This thread should really have ended here.

that's not at all what I said.

I still keep up with what everyone else is playing, but I make a point of exposing myself to completely new things as much as I can.

In any case, playing tracks that everyone knows is going to make you a pretty boring dj. I suppose since I try not to be a boring DJ, I have this tendency to always dig deeper for my music. If I was just a nostalgic club kid I'd probably be different.

Was just about to say the same thing. Quoting the "I don't see Trance getting in the way" is the best response I've ever read in these back and forth 'Trance is dead' debates.
